Bangladeshi and Indian Rock Icons Unite for Sydney Concert

Following a successful two-month European tour, legendary Bangladeshi rock star Faruq Mahfuz Anam, widely known as James, has arrived in Australia for a highly anticipated musical event. The frontman of Nagar Baul will perform alongside West Bengal singer and Fossils frontman Rupam Islam today at the Norwest Convention venue in Sydney, uniting two of the most formidable voices in contemporary Bengali rock.

Organisers have reported that tickets for the concert are completely sold out, reflecting immense interest among the Bengali expatriate community in Australia. The event brings together two key figures who have shaped the rock genre across Bangladesh and West Bengal, offering fans a rare opportunity to witness their shared chemistry live on stage.

James has long maintained an influential position in Bangladesh’s music industry, earning the affectionate title “Guru” from generations of listeners. Similarly, Rupam Islam has played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of West Bengal’s rock scene through his work with Fossils. Rupam has frequently cited James as a major personal and artistic influence, often referring to him as “Mahaguru” out of deep admiration.

Ahead of the show, a video featuring the two artistes captured a light-hearted interaction between them. Rupam expressed his excitement about sharing the stage with James once again, introducing the official concert slogan: “Joy Guru, Joy Rock, Amar Bangla.” He noted that performing alongside an artiste whose music has impacted millions of Bengali speakers worldwide is always a profound experience.

During their conversation, James warmly remarked on how long it had been since their last meaningful meeting. The musicians attempted to recall when they had previously shared a stage, reflecting on a Bangladeshi rock festival—debating whether it occurred in 2007 or 2011—and a brief interaction during a multi-artist performance in Kolkata in 2024.

Rupam also jokingly reminded James of an unfulfilled promise to drive him around Dhaka in his personal car, gently referencing the Bangladeshi star’s notoriously private and press-shy lifestyle. Before concluding the meeting, Rupam touched James’ feet to seek his blessings, underscoring the deep mutual respect that defines their relationship. Tonight’s performance stands as a significant cultural moment, bridging geographic and artistic boundaries through a shared musical tradition.
