Mika Singh Challenges Minister’s Criticism of Daler Mehndi

Singer Mika Singh has defended his elder brother, veteran Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi, following a controversy over the latter’s performance at a religious and cultural event in Uttarakhand. Questioning the reaction of state minister Subodh Uniyal, Mika argued that the audience appeared to be enjoying the concert and suggested that the minister’s criticism did not reflect the crowd’s response.

The dispute arose during the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, Uttarakhand, where Daler Mehndi performed during Navratri. A video showing Uniyal interrupting the singer on stage subsequently circulated widely on social media, prompting criticism and drawing reactions from people in the entertainment industry.

Mika questions the minister’s reaction

Commenting on the incident, Mika said the audience appeared to be responding positively to his brother’s performance, with concertgoers reportedly dancing and enjoying the music. He questioned why the minister had reacted so strongly when, according to his assessment, the crowd seemed satisfied with the show.

In remarks reported by The Times of India, Mika referred to videos and comments circulating on social media to support his view of the audience’s response. He also drew on his own experience as a performer, pointing out that even well-established singers sometimes face dissatisfaction from concertgoers.

Mika recalled instances when people attending his concerts had asked him to change a song they did not enjoy. On other occasions, he said, some audience members had walked away while he was performing a slower number.

His argument was that audience reactions should form part of any assessment of a live performance. A singer’s popularity does not guarantee that every song will appeal to everyone, and performers routinely encounter a mixture of appreciation and criticism.

By referring to these experiences, Mika suggested that the audience’s apparent enthusiasm at Daler Mehndi’s concert should also be considered when judging the performance.

What happened at the Uttarakhand event?

The controversy began when Uniyal, a cabinet minister in Uttarakhand, interrupted Daler Mehndi during his appearance at the annual fair. The minister questioned the singer’s condition and criticised the quality of his performance, alleging that he was not singing properly and was relying on lip-syncing instead of delivering a live performance.

The exchange was captured on video and spread rapidly online. The footage triggered debate over the minister’s decision to confront the singer in front of the audience, as well as the standards expected of performers engaged for major public events.

Uniyal later defended his intervention, arguing that Mehndi had not fulfilled his performance commitments adequately. He also questioned why the singer had attended the event if he was not physically fit enough to perform.

The minister’s objections centred on the quality of the show and the allegation that the singer was lip-syncing. Claims that Mehndi was under the influence of alcohol also became part of the controversy, although the available account does not independently establish those allegations.

The dispute has therefore involved competing assessments of the performance. Uniyal has maintained that his criticism was justified by what he regarded as an unsatisfactory show, while Mika has emphasised the audience’s apparent enjoyment.

Mika draws on his own experience as a performer

Mika’s response reflects the challenges singers can face when performing before live audiences. Even artists with established careers and popular songs must respond to changing audience moods, musical preferences and expectations.

His examples were intended to illustrate that dissatisfaction at a concert is not unusual. Audience members may react differently to individual songs, and their responses can vary throughout a performance. Mika’s point was that such reactions should be taken into account rather than relying solely on one person’s judgement.

In the case of Daler Mehndi, Mika maintained that the crowd appeared to be enjoying the music. He therefore questioned whether the minister’s strong reaction was warranted, given the audience response he believed was evident in the circulating footage.

His intervention has added a prominent voice to the debate, shifting some of the discussion beyond the technical quality of the performance towards the way established artists are treated during public appearances.

Social media debate continues

The incident has attracted considerable attention online, with supporters of Daler Mehndi questioning the minister’s decision to reprimand the singer on stage. The episode has also prompted broader discussion about professional commitments, performers’ physical condition and the appropriate way to address disagreements at public events.

Artists invited to perform at major programmes are generally expected to meet the terms of their engagements. At the same time, disputes over performance quality can become contentious when criticism is delivered publicly, particularly when the people involved are prominent figures.

The central disagreement remains unresolved. Uniyal has defended his actions on the grounds that the performance did not meet his expectations, while Mika has questioned the minister’s reaction and argued that the audience appeared to be enjoying the show.

The episode illustrates how a brief confrontation at a local cultural programme can quickly develop into a wider public debate once footage circulates online. It has also highlighted the differing expectations that performers, event organisers and public officials may bring to a live event.

For now, Mika’s defence has renewed attention on the Uttarakhand incident. The contrasting views over Daler Mehndi’s performance, the minister’s intervention and the audience’s response continue to shape the discussion.
