Singer Rodoshi Fatemi Shapes Bangladeshi Pop Landscape With New Release

Emerging singer-songwriter Rodoshi Isfar Fatemi is carving out a distinct niche for pop music in Bangladesh, captivating audiences with her latest single, ‘Arektu’. The track, an intimate portrayal of love and heartfelt longing, has struck a chord with listeners across the country since its release on her official YouTube channel on 28 September. Within two and a half weeks, the song garnered nearly 70,000 views and over 350 comments, sparking widespread shares across social media platforms from fans moved by its honest plea for affection.
Rodoshi penned the lyrics and composed the melody herself, starting the creative process four to five months ago and finishing the track within a month. Explaining the inspiration behind the single, she noted that the piece emerged from a personal desire for greater affection from someone close. Rather than expressing those vulnerable feelings directly, she channeled them into music, crafting a melody that mirrors the emotional ebbs and flows of the lyrics.
Her musical path has been heavily shaped by international pop icons, particularly American megastar Taylor Swift. At age 13, after reading a newspaper article about Swift’s songwriting process and listening to her hit track ‘Love Story’, Rodoshi was inspired to compose her own material. Initially writing in English on her acoustic guitar, she eventually transitioned to Bangla, penning her first native-language track, ‘Ei Shohore’, at the age of 17. That song later featured on her debut Extended Play (EP), titled ‘Sonali’.
Navigating the South Asian music industry presents unique challenges for female creators. Rodoshi observed that women in the region are predominantly recognized as vocalists, with far fewer platforms or visible role models for female lyricists and composers. Whilst the industry is slowly evolving, she remains committed to championing women’s creative independence. Her musical influences also extend to modern pop figures like Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter, and she embraces comparisons to Rodrigo’s emotive style as a testament to her pop sensibilities.
Beyond her solo achievements—which include penning and recording the track ‘Shihoron’ alongside renowned musician Habib Wahid—Rodoshi is breaking ground by establishing an all-female live band. Following a dedicated three-month search for talented female instrumentalists, she formed the ensemble with the aim of performing original compositions and fostering broader opportunities for women in technical and instrumental roles.
Currently a third-year student in the Department of Music at the University of Dhaka, Rodoshi was born in Lalmonirhat and raised in Dhaka within a creative household. Her father, Sazed Fatemi, is a musician, and her mother, Sultana Parvin, works as a yoga instructor.
‘Arektu’ serves as the lead single for her upcoming second full-length album, set for release in December. The 11-track record, written entirely by Rodoshi, showcases her versatility, as she personally handled the production, mixing, and mastering for four of the songs while collaborating with fellow musicians on the remainder. To mark the album’s debut, she is planning a solo concert featuring material from both her debut EP and the new release. While playback singing for cinema is not her immediate priority, she remains open to artistic opportunities that resonate with her creative vision for Bangladeshi pop music.
