D’Angelo’s Final Album Could Be on the Way After His Death

The iconic R&B and neo-soul artist D’Angelo tragically passed away at the age of 51 on October 14, following a brave, private battle with pancreatic cancer. Now, his close friend and collaborator, Questlove, has teased that a posthumous album from the musician could be in the works.

During a recent red carpet interview at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on November 8, Questlove was asked about any unreleased music from D’Angelo. His cryptic response? “You’ll see soon.”

When probed further about what fans could expect from a potential fourth album, Questlove shared: “It’s always the sound of yesterday but for the future, and this record’s no different.”

D’Angelo’s family issued a heartfelt statement to Variety following his passing, expressing their grief and gratitude for his musical legacy:

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life… After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all to join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

The announcement of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the music world, with Beyoncé, Nile Rodgers of Chic, and Lauryn Hill all expressing their sorrow and admiration for the “Brown Sugar” hitmaker.

Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1974, D’Angelo showed an early passion for music. He spent his teenage years performing in bands before signing with EMI in 1993, where he penned the song “U Will Know” for the group Black Men United. His career soared with the release of his debut album, Brown Sugar, in 1995, which went platinum in the US. The critically acclaimed Voodoo followed in 2000, which earned him two Grammy Awards and topped the charts. His third album, Black Messiah, came out in 2014.

In May 2025, D’Angelo cancelled his performance at the Roots Picnic Festival in Philadelphia, citing an “unforeseen medical delay” following surgery earlier in the year. Tragically, he passed away just months later.

D’Angelo leaves behind three children: sons Michael and Morocco, and daughter Imani. His ex-girlfriend, soul singer Angie Stone, who was the mother of his son Michael, tragically passed away in a car accident earlier in the year, aged 63.

Fans and the music community alike will no doubt remember D’Angelo not only for his incredible musical contributions but also for the powerful and soulful sound he brought to the genre.
