Some melodies never truly fade, while others remain unheard, waiting patiently to be discovered. That sense of anticipation can also describe the creative life of an artist—an endless search for something that exists beyond formal learning, technique or intellectual achievement.
The idea of a ‘spiritual intellectual’ does not easily fit within the conventional framework of education. Universities can provide knowledge, training and academic qualifications, but they cannot necessarily teach the deeper sensitivity through which a person understands art, life and the world around them. Such an ability may be inherent, although practice, experience and the company of a wise mentor can refine it over time.
For an artist, the process of creation can sometimes feel equally mysterious. When asked how a particular painting came into being, the simplest answer may be that the artist does not entirely know. The brush moves, ideas take shape and, gradually, an image emerges on the canvas. The finished work can seem to possess a life of its own, with the artist acting less as its sole creator than as the person guiding its development.
Pablo Picasso’s celebrated painting Guernica offers a powerful example of how art can grow out of a historic tragedy. Guernica, a town in Spain’s Basque region, was bombed on 26 April 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. German aircraft from the Condor Legion, supporting General Francisco Franco’s forces, took part in the attack, which caused widespread destruction and civilian deaths.
Picasso was subsequently asked to produce a major work for the Spanish Republican pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exposition. The resulting painting became Guernica, one of the most recognised anti-war works in modern art. Rather than presenting a conventional battlefield scene, Picasso portrayed suffering through distorted figures, fractured forms and stark symbolism.
The scale of the work was matched by the effort behind its creation. Picasso produced numerous preliminary drawings and studies before arriving at the final composition. These surviving works provide an insight into how the painting evolved through repeated experimentation and revision. His process demonstrates that artistic inspiration does not remove the need for discipline; the two often work together.
The same relationship between inner understanding and lived experience can be found in the tradition of Lalon Fakir. Lalon was not simply a Baul singer or spiritual thinker. His songs questioned social divisions, challenged established assumptions and explored the relationship between the individual, society, nature and the human body.
One of the most striking ideas associated with Lalon is the importance of knowing the soil beneath one’s feet. In one of his songs, he expresses the thought that the person who truly understands the soil can also become a genuine thinker. The idea carries a broader meaning: knowledge cannot be separated from life itself.
Formal education remains an important means of acquiring knowledge, but it is not the only source of wisdom. A person can learn from books and classrooms, yet also from nature, from ordinary people, from hardship and from close observation of the surrounding world. Experience often teaches lessons that cannot be reduced to a syllabus.
That may be why the search for knowledge and artistic expression never really ends. One melody may have already been heard, while another is still waiting somewhere beyond the horizon. The task of the artist, thinker or seeker is to remain attentive—to listen to the music that continues to play and to keep an ear open for the music that has not yet begun.
