Prominent Bangladeshi singer and composer Balam has officially returned to the music scene with his fifth solo studio album, titled Maoula. This release marks the artist’s first full-length album in twelve years, following a decade-long period where he primarily engaged with his audience through the release of individual singles. To celebrate this milestone, four tracks from the new collection were debuted during the most recent Eid-ul-Fitr, with the remainder of the project scheduled for the upcoming festive season.
The Evolution of Maoula
The title track, “Maoula,” represents a significant artistic shift for Balam, as it is his first venture into the Sufi genre. Co-written by the artist alongside Rashid Newton, the song features the spiritual refrain, “Maoula Maoula Maoula / Tui Pana Dere Maoula.” Balam revealed that the track was born from contemplations during the global pandemic, reflecting on the world’s instability and the collective sense of emptiness experienced during that era.
The album consists of six tracks, each designed to offer a distinct stylistic flavour while maintaining a core focus on melody. Balam has maintained full creative control over the project, serving as the sole composer and music director for all included songs.
Visual Production in Nepal
As part of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha festivities, Balam will release a high-budget music video for the titular track. Filming is scheduled to take place in the scenic landscapes of Nepal, directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Tanim Rahman Angshu. The video will be premiered on Balam’s official YouTube channel.
Regarding the shift back to the album format, Balam stated:
“A full album allows an artist to present a diverse range of musical hues simultaneously, providing listeners with a variety of moods. I believe music is no longer just for listening; visual representation is vital to satisfy the audience’s expectations.”
Historical Context and Discography
Since his debut as a solo artist, Balam has secured a loyal following with a string of successful albums. His earlier works produced numerous chart-topping hits such as “Ek Mutho Roddur,” “Nesha,” “Ekaki Mon,” and “Oporupa.”
