Anshuman Roy: The Voice That Echoed Bangladesh’s Liberation

Some songs transcend entertainment and become part of history. They preserve the mood of an era, reflect the aspirations of a people and carry memories from one generation to the next. For Bangladesh, few songs from the Liberation War period embody that role more distinctly than Anshuman Roy’s stirring rendition of “Shono Ekti Mujiborer Theke Lokkho Mujiborer Kontoshorer Dhwani-Protidhwani”.

Born on 19 August 1936 in Bachurdoba, in the town of Jhargram in West Midnapore, West Bengal, Anshuman Roy became a recognised voice in Bengali folk music. His career extended across folk, modern and film music, but his association with Bangladesh’s Liberation War remains the defining chapter of his artistic legacy.

Roy initially worked in government service. His attachment to music, however, eventually led him to leave the security of employment and devote himself to a career in singing. Over nearly three decades, he built a repertoire that reached audiences on both sides of the Bengal border. Songs such as “Bhadr Ashwin Mase Bhramar Lage Kacha Bashe” and “Dada Paye Pori Re, Mela Theke Bou Ene De” remain associated with his name.

Yet it was one particular song that gave Roy a lasting place in Bangladesh’s cultural history.

A song born in the atmosphere of 1971

The lyrics of “Shono Ekti Mujiborer Theke Lokkho Mujiborer Kontoshorer Dhwani-Protidhwani” were written by celebrated lyricist Gauriprasanna Majumdar, while Roy composed the music and provided the vocal performance.

The song emerged in April 1971 in Kolkata against the backdrop of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic 7 March speech. At the time, arrangements were being considered for broadcasting the speech, and the idea arose of presenting a song alongside it. Majumdar wrote the lyrics, and Roy set them to music.

The song was subsequently broadcast with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech on Akashvani Kolkata’s Sangbad-Bichitra programme. It soon spread among Bengali-speaking audiences, gaining particular resonance at a time when the people of what was then East Pakistan were fighting for independence.

Its central image was powerful: the voice of one Mujib becoming the voice of millions. The song linked the leadership associated with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the collective aspirations of the Bengali population and gave musical expression to the demand for a free Bangladesh.

Music as part of the Liberation War

The Liberation War was fought not only on the battlefield. Songs, poetry, radio broadcasts, theatre and other forms of cultural expression played a significant role in sustaining morale and communicating the aspirations of the independence movement.

Roy’s song became part of that wider cultural landscape. It crossed the border between India and the then East Pakistan and became associated with the political and cultural atmosphere surrounding the struggle for independence.

The song was also performed through the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, the broadcasting platform that became an important source of news, music and morale during the war. Renowned singer Mohammad Abdul Jabbar also recorded and performed the song, helping it reach a wider audience.

Its significance therefore extended beyond its musical qualities. At a time when Bangladesh’s future remained uncertain and millions were caught in a devastating conflict, songs of liberation provided a means of expressing solidarity, courage and hope.

A lasting bond with Bangladesh

Roy’s connection with Bangladesh was also shaped by his family background. His ancestral roots were associated with Rajshahi, giving him a personal link with the land whose struggle for independence became central to one of his best-known works.

In 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had reportedly decided to honour Anshuman Roy and Gauriprasanna Majumdar with the Bangabandhu Gold Medal for the song. The planned recognition, however, did not materialise following the political upheaval of 15 August that year and the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Decades later, Bangladesh formally recognised Roy’s contribution to the Liberation War. On 27 March 2012, the Government of Bangladesh awarded him the posthumous Muktijuddho Maitri Sammanona for his contribution during the country’s Liberation War. His son, noted musician Bhaskar Roy, accepted the honour on his behalf at a ceremony in Dhaka.

The recognition underlined the enduring place of Roy’s work within Bangladesh’s cultural memory and also reflected the broader contribution of Indian artists and cultural figures who supported the Bengali cause during 1971.

A legacy preserved through song

Anshuman Roy died on 22 April 1990, but his best-known song has continued to live beyond his lifetime. Its importance lies not simply in the popularity of its melody or lyrics, but in the historical moment it captured.

The song belongs to a period when music could serve as a form of cultural resistance and when a voice carried over the radio could reach people separated by conflict and borders. Roy’s performance gave musical form to a political and national aspiration that was unfolding in real time.

His legacy also represents an important cultural connection between West Bengal and Bangladesh. Although Roy was an Indian artist, his voice became closely associated with the Bengali struggle for independence. Through that work, he became part of a shared cultural history that extends beyond political boundaries.

On 19 August, the anniversary of his birth, Anshuman Roy is remembered not merely as a folk singer but as an artist whose voice became intertwined with one of the defining chapters of Bangladesh’s history.

His voice fell silent decades ago. The recording did not.

“Shono ekti Mujiborer theke
Lokkho Mujiborer kontoshorer dhwani-protidhwani…”

The words continue to evoke the atmosphere of 1971 and the collective aspiration that shaped the birth of Bangladesh. For that reason, Anshuman Roy remains a memorable figure in the musical history of the Liberation War and a respected cultural friend of Bangladesh.
