Dhaka Tribute Concert Celebrates Anjan Dutt’s Musical Journey

Anjan Dutt’s timeless songs, which have earned immense affection from music lovers in Bangladesh, will be celebrated through a special tribute concert in Dhaka. Titled ‘Ekdin Brishtite Bikele…’, the musical evening will feature performances by three Bangladeshi singer-songwriters—Joy Shahriar, Ahmed Hasan Sunny and Shubhra. The concert is scheduled to take place on 31 July at Butternut Café in Banani, Dhaka.

For many listeners in Bangladesh, Anjan Dutt is not merely a celebrated artiste but an emotion deeply connected with memories and nostalgia. His songs have captured the essence of urban life, love, separation, loneliness, personal struggles and the passage of time. Through simple yet powerful lyrics, he has created stories that mirror everyday experiences, allowing audiences to find their own lives reflected in his music.

The relationship between Anjan Dutt and Bangladeshi listeners has developed over several decades. His distinctive style of songwriting, conversational approach and ability to portray ordinary moments with extraordinary sensitivity have given him a unique position in Bengali music. Songs such as ‘Bela Bose’, ‘Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbo Na’, ‘Chakri’ and ‘Mary Ann’ continue to remain popular among multiple generations of listeners.

Unlike many traditional romantic or commercial songs, Anjan Dutt’s music often focuses on real-life emotions and familiar situations. His songs portray the uncertainties of relationships, the loneliness of city life and the quiet struggles of ordinary people. This honesty and simplicity have helped his work maintain its relevance over the years.

Although Anjan Dutt himself will not attend the upcoming concert, his musical legacy will remain at the heart of the programme. The three participating artistes will perform some of his most popular songs, while also presenting selections from their own original compositions. Organisers believe this combination will create a balance between paying tribute to Anjan Dutt’s contribution and highlighting the creative identities of contemporary Bangladeshi musicians.

Joy Shahriar said artistes like Anjan Dutt played a significant role in elevating the tradition of lyric-based Bengali music. He noted that alongside artistes such as Kabir Suman and Nachiketa Chakraborty, Anjan Dutt introduced a style where personal stories, social observations and everyday experiences became central elements of songwriting.

According to Joy, the greatest strength of Anjan Dutt’s music lies in his storytelling ability. He has portrayed common people, busy city life, emotional conflicts and personal feelings through remarkably simple language. This quality has influenced many younger lyricists and musicians who continue to draw inspiration from his approach.

Joy added that the concert is not only an opportunity to present Anjan Dutt’s memorable songs to audiences but also a way to express gratitude and admiration for his creative contribution to Bengali music.

Ahmed Hasan Sunny also expressed his excitement about being part of the tribute programme. He said many Bangladeshi singers and lyricists grew up listening to Anjan Dutt’s songs, which remain closely associated with memories of urban life and personal experiences. For him, performing at an event dedicated to such an influential artiste is a matter of great honour.

Sunny said he decided to join the project immediately after Joy Shahriar shared the idea of organising the concert. He hopes audiences will experience an emotional and memorable evening through familiar songs presented in a fresh musical setting.
