Asha Bhosle Dies Aged 92

Renowned playback singer and one of the most celebrated voices in Indian cinema, Asha Bhosle, has died at the age of 92. She passed away on Sunday at 12:00 noon while undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She had been admitted on Saturday following complications related to heart disease and respiratory illness.

According to hospital sources, the veteran artist had been suffering from age-related health complications for several months. Her condition deteriorated on Saturday night, after which she was moved to the intensive care unit. The news of her death was confirmed by her son, Anand Bhosle. Her last rites are scheduled to take place on Monday.

Born in 1933 into a musically inclined family, Asha Bhosle was one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian film music. She began singing professionally at the age of nine and recorded her first film song in 1943. By the 1950s, she had firmly established herself in the Hindi film industry. Despite often being overshadowed in the early years by her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, she developed a distinctive vocal style that sustained her popularity across several decades.

Although initially typecast for lighter and cabaret-style numbers, Bhosle later demonstrated her versatility through classical and semi-classical renditions. Her performance in the film Umrao Jaan was widely noted for its depth and artistry. Over the course of her long career, she received seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and two National Film Awards. Among her notable recognised songs are “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan and “Mera Kuch Samaan” from Ijaazat.

In a 2023 interview, she spoke about contemporary music, stating that she generally did not listen to modern songs for learning purposes. Instead, she preferred classical music and the work of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, though she occasionally appreciated performances by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Her personal life was marked by significant challenges and public attention. At the age of 16, against her family’s wishes, she married her personal secretary, Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 31 years old. The marriage ended in 1960 following reported difficulties in her marital home, after which she raised three children independently.

In 1980, she married music director Rahul Dev Burman (R. D. Burman), despite opposition from his family. Their relationship continued until his death in 1994. In her later years, she was closely accompanied by her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle.
