Controversy and rapper Badshah appear to be inseparable. Over the years, the artist has frequently faced criticism for the lyrics and visual content of his songs. His latest release, the Haryanvi track ‘Tatiri’, has once again landed him in hot water after its music video allegedly depicted women in a highly objectionable manner. The backlash has escalated further due to the provocative language in the song itself, prompting multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) against the rapper and a formal summons from the Haryana Women’s Commission. In response to the ongoing uproar, Haryana Police have now taken stringent action against Badshah.
The song ‘Tatiri’ was officially released on Badshah’s social media channels on 1 March. Initially, fans expressed excitement and appreciation for the catchy Haryanvi number. However, within days, a wave of online criticism emerged. Observers have accused the video of portraying women as mere objects for consumption, citing scenes where school-aged girls remove their shoulder bags and begin to dance, accompanied by sexually suggestive gestures and innuendo-laden lyrics. The Haryana Women’s Commission formally raised objections to this sexualised content, highlighting the potential impact on young viewers.
Meanwhile, Aparna Yadav, daughter-in-law of former politician Mulayam Singh Yadav, wrote to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, requesting a ban on the rapper within the state. Acting on these combined complaints, the Haryana Police have implemented stricter measures.
Haryana Police Director General Ajay Singhal stated,
“We uphold a zero-tolerance policy for content that undermines the dignity of women and minors. No one will be spared.”
In accordance with this directive, social media platforms have removed multiple links to the controversial track. According to Panchkula Police, 857 pieces of content have been taken down, including 154 YouTube videos and 703 Instagram Reels. Platforms were contacted directly to ensure the removal of these links.
| Platform | Removed Content Count |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 154 |
| Instagram Reels | 703 |
| Total | 857 |
The police have also instituted tighter surveillance over digital platforms to prevent further dissemination of the song.
An FIR has been filed against Badshah at the Sector 20 Cyber Crime Branch in Panchkula by one Abhay Choudhury, who claims the song depicts women in a vulgar and disrespectful manner. He further warned that such displays, especially involving schoolgirls, could send the wrong message to the current generation. Consequently, legal proceedings are now underway against the rapper in Haryana.
This episode underscores the heightened scrutiny artists face in India regarding content that may compromise social values or portray women disrespectfully. Authorities are signalling that both online and offline platforms will be closely monitored to prevent such content from influencing vulnerable audiences.
