“Joy Bangla, Banglar Joy”: The Song’s Enduring Legacy

“Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal
Victory for Bengal, victory assured
Millions of souls awaken together in the dark night
This is the time for a new sun to rise…”

Few songs resonate as profoundly with a nation as this anthem. Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal is far more than a melody; it is a clarion call that inspired students, farmers, workers, and citizens from all walks of life to rise against oppression. Composed in the fervour of the liberation struggle, the song ignited the spirit of resistance and became the battle hymn of Bangladesh’s freedom movement. Across religious, social, and regional divides, this anthem unified the people, serving as the inaugural tune of the independent Bengali radio broadcasts.

The song’s music was composed by Anwar Parvez, while the lyrics were penned by Gazi Mazharul Anwar, two towering figures whose contributions remain immortal. Anwar Parvez passed away on 17 June 2006, and Gazi Mazharul Anwar left this world on 4 September 2022. In an interview with Prothom Alo in March 2002, Parvez recounted the creation of this timeless composition.

The Birth of a Song

Parvez recalled:
“In 1970, I was directing music for Fakrul Bhai’s film Joy Bangladesh. Gazi Mazharul Anwar had promised to write exceptional songs for the movie. But there was no proper place to compose the music. We decided, rather audaciously, to stand on the street and create it. I remember standing opposite what was then known as the Second Capital—now the Parliament building—telling Gazi to finish the song. Within twenty minutes, we had composed it. That was the origin of Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal.”

Recording the song, however, was fraught with danger. Parvez recounted that military patrols were everywhere, and recording such a revolutionary song posed extreme risk. They secured a studio on Indira Road in Dhaka and recorded late into the night. Word spread rapidly, and a crowd gathered outside chanting the song, forcing the team to escape via a back exit to avoid detection.

Due to security concerns, the film’s score was completed in Lahore, Pakistan, under the pseudonym Sanghat, with recordings split across multiple studios to prevent exposure.

Legacy and Impact

Gazi Mazharul Anwar reflected on the song’s enduring power:
“Anwar Parvez adorned my words with a musical expression that settled in the hearts of our people. Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal inspired the nation throughout the nine months of the liberation war. It was a song, a dream, and a reality—it carried the nation’s aspirations for freedom.”
