In 1974, the celebrated music journalist Jon Landau famously declared, “I have seen the future of rock and roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Landau went on to manage Springsteen soon after—and remains his manager to this day. For decades, rock music seemed bereft of such transformative figures. Yet today, Dominic Harrison, better known as Yungblud, has breathed new life into that very legacy. His recent collaborations with legendary acts such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Aerosmith are more than guest appearances—they are symbolic beacons, signalling the enduring vitality of rock.
At just 28 years of age, Yungblud has already surpassed the shadow of the so-called ‘27 Club’ icons—Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, and Janis Joplin. His performances encapsulate rock’s quintessential elements: the swagger of Mick Jagger and Iggy Pop, the brash charm of Billy Idol and Oasis, and the theatrical flair reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne. Much like the greats who came before him, from The Rolling Stones’ Muddy Waters collaborations to The Beatles’ encounters with Little Richard, Yungblud carries his influences proudly, melding them seamlessly into his own style.
On 13 January, Yungblud delivered an unforgettable performance before over 10,000 fans at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl. From the opening notes of “Hello Heaven, Hello”, the concert was firmly under his command. The production was grand yet never overbearing: pyrotechnics, confetti, smoke, and fire punctuated the performance, heightening its theatricality without overshadowing the music.
A standout moment came with a stripped-back, heartfelt rendition of Black Sabbath’s “Changes”, dedicated to Ozzy Osbourne, while Melbourne audiences were treated to “Monday Murder”, a track absent from his Sydney show.
