Security has been markedly heightened around Chhayanaut, one of Bangladesh’s most venerable cultural institutions, following renewed fears of potential attacks and unrest. Situated in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi district, Chhayanaut has long stood as a bastion of Bengali music, art, and cultural heritage. Recent acts of aggression, however, have cast a shadow over its otherwise tranquil environment, prompting law enforcement authorities to adopt stringent and highly visible precautionary measures to protect the premises, its members, and the surrounding community.
On Friday, 19 December, observers noted an unusually large police presence around the Chhayanaut campus. Uniformed officers were stationed at the main entrance while patrol teams continuously monitored adjacent roads and alleyways. Surveillance operations were intensified to track any suspicious activity, and both plainclothes and uniformed personnel were deployed as part of a comprehensive security strategy. Residents in the vicinity remarked that the extraordinary vigilance reflected both the seriousness of the threats and the authorities’ resolve to prevent any recurrence of violence.
Police officials confirmed that these measures were aimed at averting further attacks, vandalism, or disruptive incidents. The organisation’s cultural significance and the sensitivity of recent events have elevated the situation to a high priority. The entire area surrounding Chhayanaut is under continuous observation, with officers conducting regular patrols to maintain order and ensure the safety of all present.
The alert follows a troubling incident on Thursday night when the Chhayanaut building was reportedly targeted and vandalised. Several parts of the premises were damaged, leaving members distressed and apprehensive about their security. Early on Friday morning, members of Chhayanaut began cleaning and assessing the damage. Yet, concern over possible further unrest prompted them to temporarily vacate the building ahead of Friday prayers, ensuring their safety while allowing law enforcement to maintain control.
Several members have voiced fears that another attack could occur following Jummah prayers. Drawing upon past experiences and the tense atmosphere lingering from Thursday’s events, they chose to minimise exposure by keeping the premises largely unoccupied.
Speaking to the media, Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman, Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Dhanmondi Zone under the Ramna Division, confirmed that security had been reinforced across areas of the capital affected by the previous night’s incidents. He emphasised that Chhayanaut, given its cultural prominence and symbolic value, was receiving particular attention.
“Chhayanaut represents a vital part of our nation’s cultural heritage,” he stated. “Ensuring its safety is a matter of serious responsibility. Our forces remain on high alert, and all measures are being taken to prevent any form of disturbance, keeping the situation firmly under control.”
