Where is ‘Sunil–Boruna’ Singer Mahadi Now?

Mahadi Faisal, widely recognised for his breakthrough hit “Tumi Boruna Hole Hob Ami Sunil,” is gradually making his return to the music scene after a period of relative quiet. That iconic track marked his debut in the mainstream and instantly won him a devoted following. Subsequent songs such as “Megh Hoye Kando Bole,” “Malik Rabbana,” and “Koto Kache Tomar” further cemented his reputation as one of Bangladesh’s most cherished vocalists. Now, after years of intermittent activity, Mahadi is preparing to release a new song by the end of the year and has plans to explore Nazrul Sangeet in future projects.

Mahadi’s musical journey began in earnest in 1995, when he achieved third place at the national level in the devotional song category of the ‘Notun Kuri’ competition. The following year, he won first prize in folk music at the National Education Week.

Encouraged by friends and teachers, he entered the popular reality competition ‘Close Up One’ in 2005. Progressing through several rounds, he secured a place in the Top Eleven. Although he did not make it into the final Top Ten, Mahadi had already gained nationwide recognition. Posters in his hometown and enthusiastic fans reflected the impact he had on the public early in his career.

After the reality show, Mahadi became heavily involved in live performances. In 2007, he released his first solo album, Bondona, under the Gaanchil Music label. The track “Sunil–Boruna,” written by Asif Iqbal and composed by Prince Mahmud, brought him widespread acclaim and earned him the prestigious Citycell–Channel i Music Award. Reflecting on his rise, Mahadi notes, “While I initially gained recognition through cover songs on ‘Close Up One,’ it was ‘Sunil–Boruna’ that truly introduced me to audiences through my own work.”

In 2009, he collaborated with Elita on the duet album Ontohin, producing hits like “Hrider Jhoro,” “Nijhum Raat,” and “Bhorer Shishir,” which further boosted his popularity and concert schedule. He released his second solo album, Onnorokom, in 2011, and another duet album with Elita, Chol Ontohin, in 2015.

As the audio industry evolved, album production declined, but Mahadi adapted by releasing single tracks on digital platforms. He continued to produce music even during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the motivational song Eso Shobai, featuring nearly 300 artists, for which he also served as executive producer. Other releases include Jokhon Juddhe Achi, Keu Bozhe To Keu Bozhe Na, and the latest single Koto Kache Tomar.

Mahadi emphasises, “Many assume I was on a break, but I’ve always been working. I’ve simply focused more on quality than quantity, always aiming to give listeners something meaningful.”

Outside music, Mahadi is a corporate professional. He married Arifa Rahman in 2010, and they welcomed their only daughter, Yuwena Fatiha, in 2015. The family currently resides in Dhaka. By the end of this year, he plans to release another song, with recording already prepared. He is also engaged in several new projects involving Nazrul Sangeet. With a combination of fresh work, previous experience, and his unique rhythm, Mahadi Faisal is undeniably making a strong comeback.
