Sanjib Choudhury was not just a renowned figure in the world of Bengali music but also a remarkable name in journalism. He was one of the founding members of the popular Bengali band Dolchhut, a lyricist, composer, and vocalist. With four albums to his name, Sanjib poured his artistic soul into his music, creating a collection of heart-touching songs that still resonate with listeners today. His iconic tracks, such as “Ami Tomakei Bole Debo”, continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Bengali music lovers.
Born on December 25, 1964, in the village of Makalkandi in the Banianchong area of Habiganj, Sanjib was the seventh of nine children born to Gopal Choudhury and Prabhasini Choudhury. His early education began at Habiganj Government High School, where he completed his studies until the eighth grade before moving to Dhaka. He enrolled at Nabakumar Institute, where he stunned everyone by securing the 12th position in the merit list in his 1978 Secondary School Certificate exams. Later, in 1980, he made it to the merit list again in the Higher Secondary Examination at Dhaka College.
Although he initially enrolled at Dhaka University in the Mathematics department, Sanjib eventually graduated with a degree in Mass Communication and Journalism. His academic achievements, however, were only one side of his talent. His true calling lay in his creativity, which he expressed both through music and his career in journalism.
Sanjib’s impact on journalism was equally profound. He became a prominent journalist working for some of Bangladesh’s leading newspapers, including Ajker Kagoj, Bhorer Kagoj, and Jaijaidin. His fearless voice echoed through the corridors of Bangladesh’s press, particularly during the anti-autocracy movement and the fight against communalism. He was known for his bold stand on social issues, standing up for truth and justice, and speaking out against the government when necessary.
Despite his short life, Sanjib’s contributions continue to inspire. On November 19, 2007, at the age of just 42, he passed away at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. However, his music, his ideals, and his humanistic approach to life have lived on. Sanjib Choudhury remains an unforgettable star in Bengali music and journalism, whose light will continue to guide us for many years to come.
