Kanye West, now known as Ye, is facing the threat of immediate arrest in Brazil if he makes any comments supporting Nazism or apologises for his controversial remarks during his upcoming concert in São Paulo on November 29. The rapper has been under intense scrutiny for years due to his anti-Semitic comments, which have resulted in multiple bans from social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
In a bid to address his past behaviour, Ye recently met with prominent New York rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto to apologise for the harm caused by his inflammatory statements, claiming that his actions were influenced by his bipolar disorder. However, the rapper’s controversial history has led to stern warnings from Brazilian authorities.
According to a report from Metrópoles, the São Paulo State Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPSP) has instructed Riot Police to be on standby during the show, with strict orders to arrest Ye if he performs any song or makes any statement in defence of Nazism. The same warning applies to the event’s organisers, Guilherme Cavalcante and Jean Fabrício Ramos (Faublous Fabz), following Ye’s past performance of a song titled ‘Heil Hitler’ back in May, which drew widespread condemnation.
The concert was initially scheduled for the Interlagos racetrack, but this venue was cancelled last month after the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, announced the city would not provide a public space for the event. While West is still expected to perform in São Paulo, no alternative venue has been confirmed, casting doubt on whether the concert will go ahead at all.
In addition to his social media tirades, Ye also caused further outrage earlier this year when he began selling a white T-shirt emblazoned with a large swastika. The shirt’s release led to the closure of his Yeezy website by Shopify. Ye later claimed he had been planning the design for years. In a 2023 documentary, West also alleged that Jewish people were working together to “hold him back” and suggested they should “forgive Hitler.” The year before, he made headlines when he controversially said that he did not believe in the term “anti-Semitism,” prompting criticism from figures like Piers Morgan, who argued that Ye had failed to understand the harm his words were causing.
In light of his history, Brazilian authorities are taking no chances, and West’s upcoming performance could very well be halted before it even begins.
