Popular Bangladeshi musician Balam is set to return with a full-length solo album after more than a decade, marking a significant milestone in his career. Titled Maola, the project will be his fifth solo album and has already generated considerable anticipation within the music industry and among listeners.
Although Balam has remained active over the years through the release of individual tracks, this new body of work signals a deliberate return to the traditional album format. According to the artist, a full-length album offers a broader creative canvas, enabling him to explore diverse moods, styles and musical narratives within a single cohesive project.
The album comprises six tracks in total, four of which were released earlier during the last Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. The remaining highlight is the title track Maola, which is scheduled for release alongside a music video during the upcoming Eid festival. The lyrics for the title song have been jointly written by Rashid Newton and Balam himself, featuring spiritually inclined lines that reflect a Sufi-inspired tone, including the refrain: “Maola Maola Maola / Tui Pana Dere Maola”.
The music video for the title track has been shot in Nepal, adding a visually rich international backdrop to the production. It is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tanim Rahman Anshu, and is expected to feature large-scale cinematography that blends natural landscapes with symbolic storytelling elements.
Balam has noted that the inspiration behind Maola emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that deeply influenced his reflections on uncertainty, emotional isolation and human vulnerability. This introspective phase led him towards exploring a Sufi musical direction for the first time in his career, marking a notable stylistic shift.
He also emphasised that all songs in the album have been composed and arranged by him, ensuring a consistent artistic identity throughout the project. Visual presentation has been given equal importance, reflecting the growing trend in which music is experienced not only audibly but also visually.
