Bangladeshi rock band Souls has paid a heartfelt tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his birth anniversary through a special musical presentation. As part of the celebration, the band has released a fresh rearranged version of Tagore’s iconic song “Megh Boleche Jabo Jabo Ebar”, featuring lead vocals by Partha Barua. The track was simultaneously released on a video-sharing platform and major audio streaming services at 5:00 pm on Thursday.
According to keyboardist Mir Masum, the project had been in development for quite some time. He explained that the band had recorded the song well in advance, with a long-standing intention of having Partha Barua interpret the piece. “This was a collective effort from the entire team. We have tried our utmost to preserve the original notation and emotional essence while presenting it in a contemporary arrangement,” he said.
The release forms part of Souls’ broader initiative marking their 50-year journey in music. As part of the celebration, the band plans to release a total of nine unplugged tracks. So far, three songs from this series have already been made public. The ongoing schedule was briefly paused for the Tagore commemorative release, but the band has confirmed that the weekly rollout will resume from next week, with one new track scheduled every seven days.
One of the most anticipated upcoming releases in the series is a refreshed unplugged version of their popular song “Mon Shudhu Mon Chuyeche”, which is expected to reintroduce a classic favourite to audiences in a more intimate acoustic format.
Speaking about the band’s current activities, Mir Masum also highlighted recent changes in the lineup. Drummer Abhijit Sengupta has recently joined the group, and rehearsals with him are ongoing. Over the past two months, Souls has already performed in several concerts and is preparing for a number of upcoming domestic and international shows. The band, he noted, is currently experiencing a particularly active and productive phase.
Members of Souls believe that their reinterpretation of Tagore’s music will resonate strongly with listeners. They expect the initiative to create renewed interest not only among fans of the band but also among admirers of Tagore’s timeless compositions, bridging classical literary heritage with modern musical expression.
