Hasan urges forgiveness after bottle thrown at concert

Hasan, lead vocalist of Bangladeshi band Ark, has expressed disappointment after a bottle was thrown at him while he was performing at the ‘Songs of the Monsoon Revolution’ concert on Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka. Rather than responding with anger or calling for retaliation, the veteran singer has urged people to approach the incident with forgiveness and greater awareness.

The concert was organised in Dhaka on 5 August to mark July Mass Uprising Day. During Ark’s performance, a bottle was thrown from the audience towards Hasan while he was singing on stage. Footage of the incident and subsequent discussions circulated on social media, prompting criticism from many in the music community over the behaviour.

After returning to Dhaka from Rajshahi, Hasan shared his reaction on social media. Reflecting on his long career in Bangla band music, he said he had encountered many different experiences during his years in the industry, but having a bottle thrown at him while performing was unexpected and deeply disappointing.

Despite his frustration, Hasan said he did not want to respond by developing hatred towards the person responsible. Instead, he suggested that the individual may not have fully understood the consequences of such an act and said he preferred to view the matter through the lens of forgiveness.

His position, however, does not mean that such behaviour should be accepted as normal. A concert is built around a relationship between performers and audiences. Artists depend on the audience’s attention, appreciation and participation to create an atmosphere in which music can be enjoyed. Throwing objects at performers, insulting them or creating a situation that threatens their safety can quickly undermine that relationship.

Hasan also stressed the importance of mutual respect. Audiences are entitled to disagree with an artist, a song or a performance, and they have every right to express their views. But disagreement should never take a form that places an artist’s physical safety or dignity at risk.

The singer also questioned the practice of judging artists primarily through political labels. In his view, an artist’s identity and career should not be reduced to participation in a particular event or appearance during a particular political period. Artists often perform at a wide range of public, private and political events throughout their careers, and appearing at one such programme should not automatically result in a permanent political identity being attached to them.

Hasan’s comments have also brought attention to the broader issue of security at public concerts. A successful musical event requires more than popular performers, quality production and a large audience. Organisers have a responsibility to create a secure environment for artists, musicians and other performers on stage. Audiences, too, have a responsibility to ensure that their conduct does not disrupt the programme or endanger anyone.

The incident did not deter Hasan from returning to the stage. On 6 August, the day after the Dhaka concert, he and Ark performed at a concert organised at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology. His return to live performance underlined his continued commitment to music despite the unpleasant experience.

The episode has consequently raised broader questions about the relationship between artists and audiences in Bangladesh’s concert culture. Live performances depend on trust, enthusiasm and respect. While audiences can cheer, criticise and express their preferences, maintaining basic standards of conduct is essential to preserving a safe environment for everyone involved.

Hasan’s response therefore extends beyond his personal experience. His call is for awareness rather than revenge, and for forgiveness without normalising unacceptable conduct. He has urged organisers and audiences alike to act more responsibly so that no Bangladeshi artist has to face bottle-throwing, humiliation or similar unsafe behaviour while standing on stage.

For Hasan, the answer to an unpleasant incident is not hostility. It is to protect the dignity of music, respect those who perform it and ensure that concert stages remain places where artists and audiences can come together safely.
