The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has announced the temporary postponement of the inauguration of “Nazrul Year”, a year-long national programme organised in memory of the National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. The opening ceremony, which was originally scheduled to begin on 18 June and run for three days, has been deferred to the final week of June in order to ensure a more comprehensive and coordinated arrangement. Authorities have stated that a revised timetable will be published shortly.
The year-long observance was formally declared on 23 May at a commemorative event held in Trishal, Mymensingh, marking the poet’s birth anniversary. During the event, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced that the period from 25 May 2026 to 25 May 2027 would be observed nationwide as “Nazrul Year”. Following this declaration, preparations began across the country to design and implement a broad range of cultural, educational, and research-oriented activities.
A high-level review meeting was held on Monday, chaired by Cultural Affairs Adviser Naiti Ray Chowdhury, to assess the progress of preparations. Officials confirmed that financial allocations for implementing programmes at district and sub-district levels have already been approved. The funding is intended to facilitate local initiatives highlighting Nazrul’s literary works, music, and philosophical contributions.

Officials indicated that these funds will be used to organise a wide variety of events at the local level, including recitations of Nazrul’s poetry, musical performances based on his songs, seminars, cultural competitions, and youth engagement activities. The objective is to ensure widespread participation and to bring Nazrul’s artistic legacy closer to communities across the country.
In addition to decentralised events, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has proposed several major national and international programmes under the “Nazrul Year” initiative. These include a large-scale Nazrul cultural fair, an international conference of Nazrul scholars, nationwide literary and music competitions, and the publication of a commemorative anthology of selected works.
Plans are also underway for special broadcasts on national television and other media platforms. Universities are expected to host academic discussions and research programmes focusing on Nazrul’s contributions to themes such as social equality, humanism, and women’s emancipation. Further proposals include a national patriotic Nazrul music festival in December and a special series of religious devotional performances based on his Hamd and Naat compositions during Ramadan.
Officials emphasised that many of these proposals are still under review and will be finalised after formal approval. Once confirmed, a detailed implementation roadmap and updated schedule will be issued. Authorities expressed confidence that a well-coordinated and inclusive execution of the programme will help introduce Kazi Nazrul Islam’s literary, musical, and philosophical legacy to younger generations in a more meaningful and enduring manner, thereby strengthening his place in the national cultural consciousness.
