Shakira Draws Massive Beach Crowd in Rio de Janeiro

Colombian singer Shakira delivered a large-scale open-air concert on Saturday night (2 May) at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, drawing an estimated 2 million attendees to the waterfront event. The performance formed part of a free public show held on the city’s iconic beachfront, with organisers opening access to spectators without ticket restrictions.

Although the concert began slightly later than scheduled, the delay did not diminish audience anticipation. Large crowds had already gathered along the beach and surrounding areas well before the start of the show, reflecting the scale of interest in the performance.

The 49-year-old artist appeared on stage to a striking visual display, with drones illuminating the night sky to form the outline of her well-known stage persona, “She Wolf”. The aerial sequence accompanied her entrance and contributed to the production design of the event.

Shakira’s set featured a selection of her widely recognised songs, delivered in a high-energy format characteristic of her live performances. The event brought together fans from across Brazil and beyond, many of whom travelled considerable distances to attend. Among them was Graciele Vaz, who reportedly travelled for around four hours and arrived at the beach the night before the concert in order to secure a viewing spot.

Another attendee, 26-year-old designer João Pedro Yelin, described Shakira as a leading figure among Latin female artists and highlighted her creative independence. He stated: “She is a leading Latin woman who inspires us. She does not confine herself to any mould, she creates art from love.”

The concert contributed to the long-standing tradition of large-scale public events held at Copacabana Beach, a location frequently used for major cultural gatherings due to its extensive shoreline and capacity to host vast crowds.
