Singer Jahid Antu Controversy Case

Bangladeshi singer, composer and lyricist Jahid Antu has recently found himself at the centre of a legal and social media controversy following serious allegations involving a former partner. The young musician, who gained popularity through online platforms and music performances, was briefly detained in connection with a case filed in Dhaka’s Gulshan area before being granted bail within a day.

According to case details, allegations were made by an Eden College student and former partner of the artist, claiming that she was subjected to physical and sexual assault at a residence in Gulshan on 27 March. The complaint was formally lodged on 30 March under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Gulshan Police Station. Following the filing of the case, law enforcement authorities arrested the accused, who was later released on interim bail by a Metropolitan Magistrate on 2 April. His bail has been reported to remain valid until 19 April.

The relationship between the complainant and Jahid Antu reportedly began the previous year after their introduction during a guitar class session held at the TSC area of the University of Dhaka. The acquaintance allegedly developed into a romantic relationship, which later ended, resulting in a cessation of communication between the two parties.

The complaint further alleges that on the evening of 27 March, the student was invited to Antu’s residence in Gulshan under the pretext of a professional photoshoot. It is claimed that once she arrived, she was subjected to unwanted physical advances and assault. When she resisted, she was allegedly beaten, sustaining injuries to her face, neck, and head. The complainant later reportedly managed to leave the premises and sought medical attention at Kurmitola General Hospital with the assistance of family members.

Following his release on bail, Jahid Antu posted a statement on social media addressing the matter indirectly. In his Facebook post dated 7 April, he cautioned against forming opinions based on one-sided narratives and stated that legal authorities should determine the truth. He further wrote that if he were found guilty, he would accept the maximum punishment, even death, and placed his faith in divine judgement.

The case has drawn considerable attention in Bangladesh, particularly due to Antu’s growing popularity as a young musician known for his online performances and participation in music competitions, including early recognition linked to an audition stage of an international talent programme.
