Mamata Banerjee Visits Singer Nachiketa Chakraborty in Hospital

Kolkata’s celebrated and soul-stirring singer, Nachiketa Chakraborty, was admitted to a private hospital in the city following a sudden episode of chest pain, raising widespread concern among his fans and the general public. Demonstrating her personal regard and concern, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital on Monday, 6 December, immediately after returning from an official trip to Cooch Behar, to enquire about the singer’s health and offer her support.

According to hospital sources, initial examinations revealed a blockage in Mr Chakraborty’s heart. On Saturday, 6 December, he underwent an urgent surgical procedure during which two stents were successfully placed in his coronary arteries. Doctors have confirmed that his condition is currently stable and that he remains under continuous, meticulous observation. The medical team reported gradual improvement in his physical wellbeing.

During her visit, Chief Minister Banerjee met with the attending doctors to obtain a detailed update and spent time with Mr Chakraborty, reflecting their long-standing friendship and close personal bond. A few months ago, during the Durga Puja celebrations, she had advised him to prioritise his health. Upon learning of the surgery, she acted immediately, underlining her ongoing concern for his wellbeing.

Nachiketa Chakraborty has been an iconic figure in Bengali music for decades, enchanting audiences with his life-affirming and soulful songs, including Neelanjana, Anirban, Doctor, and Briddhashram. With advancing age, his physical resilience has naturally declined, a matter that the Chief Minister has been attentive to over the years. His demanding concert schedule during the winter season, coupled with limited rest, appears to have contributed to the recent health scare. Routine health screenings at a diagnostic centre in Park Circus initially flagged potential issues, which prompted further tests confirming the cardiac blockage, leading to his urgent hospital admission and prompt intervention.

Hospital authorities have reiterated that Mr Chakraborty remains stable and is receiving careful monitoring. Fans and well-wishers across West Bengal and beyond have taken to social media to send messages of encouragement, hoping for his swift and complete recovery.
