Canadian singer Tate McRae delivered a reflective speech while receiving the Powerhouse of the Year Award at Variety’s 2025 Hitmakers Brunch on 6 December. Addressing the audience of music and entertainment professionals, she shared how touring has reshaped her perspective as an artist and young woman.
She began, “As a young woman in the music industry, I don’t always feel powerful and sometimes I don’t know what power means.” Her touring experience over the past year offered her new insights into confidence and the influence of external expectations. “The more I performed, the more I realised that power cannot be measured only by applause, metrics, or flawless performances,” she said.
Touring also revealed a duality within her. “I toured all year and was surprised that two completely different people could exist in one body. On one hand, the shy and awkward me, and on the other, the fearless and confident me on stage. This contrast helped me reconcile with myself.” She added, “It forced me to appreciate who I am when I’m alone.”
Regarding her understanding of power, she said, “Power, to me, is not about perfection or success. It is about grit, authenticity, and the courage to put yourself out there.”
The speech came just weeks after her Miss Possessive Tour concluded. The 22-year-old artist’s first arena tour included 83 shows and supported her third studio album, So Close to What. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and topped charts worldwide. The tour further reinforced her strength as a live performer.
