Elon Musk has hit back sharply at Billie Eilish after the Grammy-winning singer publicly criticised his vast personal wealth and questioned his dedication to global humanitarian causes. Late on Monday evening (November 17), the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX responded to a post summarising Eilish’s remarks with a blunt reply: “She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.”
The controversy began on November 13, when Billie Eilish called out Musk, posting a series of Instagram Stories highlighting the growing divide between the ultra-wealthy and the rest of the world. The “Birds of a Feather” singer shared a viral graphic outlining what a trillionaire could theoretically achieve, ranging from solving world hunger to saving endangered species. She added her own pointed critique, using strong language to condemn Musk for refusing to use his wealth for large-scale societal change.
Eilish’s criticism didn’t come out of nowhere. Throughout the year, she has been vocal about issues such as environmental action, wealth redistribution, and corporate accountability. Just weeks earlier, she used her acceptance speech at the 2025 WSJ Innovator Awards to challenge the concentration of wealth among the world’s wealthiest individuals. During that speech, she donated $11.5 million from her Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour to organisations fighting food insecurity and climate change.
Her condemnation of global wealth inequality aligns with her long-standing commitment to sustainability. Eilish has worked alongside Reverb to reduce the environmental impact of her tours, introduced plant-based initiatives at venues, and set up interactive “Eco Villages” to encourage fans to take part in climate action.
