Foot-Tapping Music at New Sussex Symphony Concert

The New Sussex Symphony is set to deliver an exciting concert on Saturday, 22nd November, featuring lively and evocative music from the dance stage and film scores. The performance will also serve as part of the annual “Orchestras Feeding America” food drive, organised by the League of American Orchestras. Concertgoers are encouraged to donate non-perishable canned goods, with all collected items being donated to the Manna House soup kitchen in Newton.

The concert’s highlight will be The Fairy’s Kiss by Igor Stravinsky, a 1928 ballet that takes inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s somewhat dark tale, The Ice Maiden. This will be followed by another Russian work, Alexander Borodin’s magnificent overture to the opera Prince Igor, which promises to captivate with its rich orchestral textures.

The evening will also include a light-hearted French ballet: Sylvia by Leo Delibes. Known for its infectious rhythms and foot-tapping charm, this piece features a lively section of plucked notes that gained renewed fame in the children’s DVD Beethoven’s Wig.

The concert will feature Aimee Morrill Bryant, the orchestra’s concertmaster for the 2024-25 season, as a soloist in Meditation from the opera Thaïs. This hauntingly beautiful piece is familiar to many from its use in the soundtrack for the movie Titanic.

The performance will begin at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Newton, located at 111 Ryerson Avenue, Newton. Tickets can be purchased in advance via Venmo (@NewSussexSym), or at the door. Prices are $15 for adults, and $10 for seniors, students, and veterans. Children under 5 can attend for free. This concert is made possible with additional funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council.
