After gifting Tollywood with one hit after another over the last five years, director Srijit Mukherji is now set to take on a new role—music director. Though Srijit’s connection with music has been well-known for a while, having written songs for his own films and even those of other directors, this will mark his first time stepping into the role of composer.
While Srijit has previously written lyrics for several films, including Le Chakka and Cross Connection, he has never composed music for them. This time, however, he will be working as the music director for a film directed by someone else—not his own project.
Srijit is all set to compose music for Shreerampur Diaries, a Bengali film directed by Suman Ghosh. The film, set in the early ’90s, will portray a love story, and Srijit has agreed to take on this new role at the request of director Ghosh, with whom he shares a strong professional bond.
The film stars Riddhi Sen and Surangana Bandopadhyay in the lead roles. The two actors are not just co-stars but close friends in real life, and their natural chemistry is expected to shine through on screen.
In another exciting development, Srijit will also be seen as a music director in his own upcoming film Emperor vs Sharatchandra, where he will compose the music, although the singing will be done by other artists. This marks the director’s double role in the film—as both director and composer.
Emperor vs Sharatchandra is scheduled for release on May 1 next year. The film will reunite popular stars Abir Chatterjee and Sohini Sarkar, marking their return as a pair after a long hiatus. It will also feature Dibyani Mondal, known for her role in the television show Phulki, in her big-screen debut. Additionally, Rudranil Ghosh, who has worked with Srijit before, will be part of the project, alongside Tota Roy Chowdhury, Kanchan Mallik, and Satyam Bhattacharya.
Meanwhile, Srijit’s previous film Padatik, inspired by the life of legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen, has garnered praise both in India and internationally. The film, starring Chanchal Chowdhury, was recently honoured at the 3rd Dhaka International Film Festival.
With his upcoming ventures as both a director and music composer, Srijit Mukherji continues to demonstrate his versatility in the Bengali film industry.
