World Music Day Celebrated Across Bangladesh and Globally

For music enthusiasts, listening to music is not bound by a specific day or time; it serves as a constant companion 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nonetheless, to celebrate, honour, and express love for music globally, a specific day has been dedicated: “World Music Day”. Today, 21 June 2026, marks the celebration of this unique day. Like many other countries across the globe, Bangladesh is celebrating the occasion through various detailed arrangements, including open-air concerts, colourful processions, and complimentary musical performances. The core objective of this day is to foster harmony, peace, and positive thinking through the medium of music.

The Historical Context and Origins of World Music Day

Although World Music Day is celebrated on 21 June, its historical origins trace back several decades. According to many, in 1976, the American musician Joel Cohen, who was working in France, proposed an all-night musical celebration to mark the “summer solstice”, or the arrival of summer. As a progression of this concept, Jack Lang, the French Minister for Culture, first initiated plans in 1981 to establish a formal day for music.

To break away from traditional musical conventions in France, Jack Lang appointed Maurice Fleuret. In 1982, Fleuret conducted a massive statistical survey on the musical habits of the French population, which revealed that one out of every two young people in France could play a musical instrument. Setting aside conventional constraints, a new approach was announced under which youth would not just learn traditional music, but also explore various genres including rock, jazz, and pop. Ultimately, this initiative succeeded through the collective efforts of Jack Lang, engineer Christian Dupavillon, and Maurice Fleuret.

Originally launched in France in 1982 as “Fête de la Musique” (or “Make Music Day”), the event is currently observed in approximately 120 countries and 450 cities, including Argentina, Australia, Britain, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, and Costa Rica. On this day, artists perform free music across restaurants, parks, and public transport to spread peace and positivity.

Special Media Broadcast: “Songs of Bengal”

Television networks have also integrated dedicated programming to commemorate World Music Day. At 8:30 pm on 21 June, Maasranga Television broadcast a special programme titled “Songs of Bengal: Pranbondher Sone”. The event was designed to present the compositions and life philosophy of the mystic poet and lyricist Hason Raja to the younger generation.

The popular musical artist Shayan Chowdhury Arnob served as the music director and curator of the show. Under his creative direction and musical rearrangement, Hason Raja’s songs were presented in a contemporary atmosphere. The production highlighted the timeless relevance, philosophy, and life vision of Hason Raja through music, storytelling, and creative art. The initiative was recently organised jointly by “MW Magazine Bangladesh” and “Maya”, a natural health brand of Square Toiletries Limited.
