Monir Khan Recalls Assault and Legal Troubles Over Singing

Bangladeshi singer Monir Khan has recalled a painful chapter from his early life, when his passion for music brought him into conflict with people in his village. He said he and his father, Mahbub Ali Khan, were beaten by villagers over his singing, while attempts to damage his harmonium and repeated legal complaints made his early musical journey deeply difficult.

Speaking in a video interview with Maasranga Television on Tuesday, 13 October, the singer described how a hobby encouraged by his father eventually became the source of serious personal and family distress. According to Monir Khan, he faced seven or eight cases because he sang at home and, at one stage, had to move from place to place to avoid further trouble.

“One religious figure used to complain about me for singing in my own home,” he recalled, explaining how the situation escalated. What began as opposition to his musical interests developed into a prolonged struggle that affected both him and his family.

In one of the interview clips released by the television channel, Monir Khan described an incident in which a group of people came to their house intending to break his harmonium. He said he held on to the instrument as they beat him. His father tried to protect both his son and the harmonium, sustaining an injury to his back in the process.

The episode left a lasting impression on the singer, particularly because his father had been the person who first recognised his musical ability and encouraged him to pursue it.

A father’s belief in his son’s talent

Monir Khan’s father, Mahbub Ali Khan, was a schoolteacher known for his disciplined approach to life. According to the singer, his father carefully considered his decisions and provided clear guidance to his children from an early age. Education, daily routines and personal conduct were all matters he took seriously.

Monir Khan’s musical promise had begun to emerge during his primary school years, when he regularly took part in competitions and often secured first place. His father noticed this natural ability and began considering whether music could become a meaningful pursuit for his son.

The period immediately after Monir Khan’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations proved decisive. At that time, results could take around three to three-and-a-half months to be published, leaving students with a lengthy break after their examinations. His father thought the interval might be an opportunity for the young Monir to develop his musical interests.

He therefore suggested that they buy a harmonium. The journey to purchase the instrument became one of the singer’s cherished memories of his father.

Monir Khan recalled that the two travelled approximately 17 kilometres by bicycle to buy it. The gesture represented more than a simple purchase. His father was investing in his son’s potential, hoping that the young musician would have an opportunity to develop his abilities.

That encouragement, however, came at a considerable personal cost. The family’s decision to support his musical ambitions attracted opposition, and the resulting tensions affected both father and son.

Standing firm despite social opposition

Monir Khan said his father faced social embarrassment and resistance over his decision to support his son’s musical education. Despite the criticism and difficulties, Mahbub Ali Khan remained convinced that his son’s talent deserved an opportunity to flourish.

Recalling his father’s attitude, the singer said he believed that a talent bestowed by Allah should be allowed to find expression. His father was prepared to confront the obstacles standing in the way of that ambition.

For Monir Khan, this unwavering support became a source of strength. At a time when his musical interests had exposed him to hostility, his father’s encouragement gave him a reason to continue.

The singer also remembered his father’s insistence that he should make an effort to fulfil the hopes placed in him. His father promised to provide whatever support he could, reinforcing the belief that the family would not abandon his ambitions simply because others disapproved.

The experience illustrates the personal challenges Monir Khan says he encountered before establishing himself as a singer. His account also highlights the role his father played in sustaining his confidence when pursuing music appeared to carry serious social consequences.

Singing in court and his account of acquittal

Monir Khan also recalled his legal difficulties, saying that he had been forced to keep moving from place to place because of the cases brought against him.

One particularly striking memory involved singing while standing in the dock. According to the singer, he secured bail in connection with the case after singing in court. He said the judge subsequently acquitted him.

Monir Khan described the incident as part of a much longer and complicated episode in his life. However, the interview did not provide detailed information about the individual cases, the precise allegations or the court proceedings. His account of the acquittal therefore remains his recollection of the experience.

Despite these difficulties, he continued to pursue music. He began formal training under his first music teacher, Reza Khosru, taking another step towards developing the talent his father had identified years earlier.

His recollections reveal the extent to which his early musical journey was shaped by more than artistic ambition. He had to contend with family distress, social opposition and legal uncertainty while trying to establish a place for himself as a singer.

Moving to Dhaka brought new challenges

Eventually, Monir Khan left his village and moved to Dhaka in search of opportunities. The transition, however, brought its own emotional difficulties.

He recalled feeling his father’s absence more intensely after arriving in the capital. Surrounded by crowds, he nevertheless felt alone and uncertain about his future. He wondered who would recognise his aspirations and where he could turn for help in a city filled with unfamiliar people.

For a young man attempting to build a musical career, the uncertainty was considerable. He had left behind the familiar surroundings of his village and the family support that had sustained him during earlier struggles. In Dhaka, he needed to find a way to earn a living while continuing to pursue music.

A family acquaintance, Nuruzzaman Khokon, played an important role in this transition. A lawyer from his village, Khokon visited Monir Khan’s father and urged him to send his son to the capital, believing that remaining in the village would limit his opportunities.

With Khokon’s support and guidance, Monir Khan began giving private tuition while continuing his musical activities. Balancing work with music allowed him to continue pursuing his ambitions during a period when his future remained uncertain.

His account suggests that the encouragement of people who recognised his potential was crucial in helping him navigate the early stages of his career.

Memories of his father remain a source of strength

Monir Khan lost his father, Mahbub Ali Khan, on 25 January 2025. In the interview, he spoke warmly about the values his father instilled in him and the guidance that continues to influence his life.

The singer recalled his father’s belief that financial wealth was not the only measure of a parent’s contribution. Mahbub Ali Khan would tell his children that, although he was not a wealthy man, the emotional support he could offer might be beyond the reach of even many millionaires.

For Monir Khan, his father’s legacy extends well beyond the purchase of a harmonium or the encouragement to learn music. His father’s discipline, determination and willingness to stand by his son during difficult times helped shape the singer’s outlook on life.

Monir Khan said he continues to draw inspiration from his father’s example and tries to follow the guidance he received, while also remembering his mother’s love and the values his parents taught him.

He later recorded a song in memory of his father, reflecting on the violence they had experienced and the role religious objections had played in the hostility towards their musical pursuits. According to Monir Khan, when the song was played at tea stalls in their village, his father would listen and weep uncontrollably.

The memory captures the emotional cost of the family’s ordeal. For Mahbub Ali Khan, the song brought back the painful experience of seeing his son suffer because of the very talent he had hoped to nurture.

For Monir Khan, it remains a reminder of the man who believed in his abilities before he had an established career. His father’s support helped him persevere through a difficult beginning, and the memories of that support continue to occupy a central place in his life and musical journey.
