China’s Music Market Hits Global Stage with Luminate and Tencent Partnership

For the first time, Chinese music streaming and sales data will be included in Luminate’s global dataset and featured on Billboard’s Global Charts.

Luminate and Tencent Music Join Forces

Luminate and Tencent Music Entertainment Group (TME) have announced a historic partnership that will integrate China’s music market into the global music data landscape.

This collaboration sees TME’s major streaming platforms—QQ Music, Kugou Music, Kuwo Music, and JOOX—contributing their data to Luminate’s CONNECT platform, which is widely used across the music industry to track performance. This marks the first time that data from Chinese music platforms will be part of the global music data network.

What This Means

This partnership brings China’s massive music market to the global stage, filling a significant gap in music consumption metrics. Until now, global data on music trends has excluded China, one of the world’s largest and most dynamic music markets.

Starting in the coming weeks:

  • China’s music market will be included in Luminate CONNECT’s global streaming and sales data.
  • Billboard’s Global Charts will now feature data from China for the very first time.

This is a game-changer for the global music industry, offering unprecedented insight into Chinese consumption patterns and allowing Chinese artists to be recognised on a global scale.

TC Pan, Group Vice President of TME commented, “This collaboration with Luminate represents a data-driven effort to establish a unified global content ecosystem. China is one of the most dynamic music markets in the world, and through this partnership, all content on TME’s platforms—whether domestic or international—will participate in and even help shape global music trends.”

Luminate’s Global Expansion

This partnership aligns with Luminate’s broader strategy to expand its international coverage. Since 2022, Luminate has been increasing its dataset to include emerging music markets, with recent additions from the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and now China.

Luminate’s expansion has already helped spotlight the rise of K-Pop and J-Pop on the global stage, and now Chinese music will be part of that conversation.

Rob Jonas, CEO of Luminate, said, “This partnership marks a pivotal moment for the global music industry, underscoring Luminate’s commitment to providing the most accurate and comprehensive measurement of music activity worldwide. As the industry’s most trusted source of streaming and sales data, our customers and partners expect the most comprehensive insights to inform their business decisions, and we know how invaluable it is for China’s market to be represented in those insights.”

Why It Matters

For the global music industry, this partnership is more than just about numbers; it’s about visibility, representation, and opportunity. By incorporating China’s music data, the industry can better understand and engage with Chinese audiences, while offering new opportunities for labels, artists, and marketers to connect with this vital market.

For Chinese artists, the collaboration ensures their successes will be visible to the world, allowing them to gain recognition and grow their international presence.
