Charli XCX has ventured into gothic territory, collaborating with Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale on a haunting new single, “House.” The track, which features on the soundtrack of Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights film adaptation, brings together two distinct musical worlds: Charli’s experimental pop sensibility and Cale’s avant-garde rock legacy.
The collaboration marks an exciting fusion of generations. Charli, known for her ever-evolving pop style, and Cale, a seminal figure in experimental music since the 1960s, create an eerie yet captivating harmony on “House.” The music video for the song enhances this atmosphere, set in a remote cabin where both artists appear in isolation. Cale delivers a chilling spoken-word segment, adding to the track’s haunting and hypnotic feel. The minimalist piano and moody synths amplify the desolate, romantic undertones that define Wuthering Heights.
Charli has been vocal about her admiration for Cale, tracing their collaboration back to her viewing of Todd Haynes’ 2021 documentary, The Velvet Underground. In a November 7 post on X, Charli shared how Cale’s description of the Velvet Underground’s sound, that every song should be “elegant and brutal,” resonated with her. “I got really stuck on that phrase,” she revealed to fans.
Beyond her musical ventures, Charli is branching out into film. She has several upcoming roles in projects like Faces of Death, I Want Your Sex, The Gallerist, and Sacrifice. “House” is a testament to Charli’s ability to navigate between genres and eras, blending avant-garde rock history with the cutting edge of modern pop.
The Wuthering Heights film is slated for release on February 13, 2026.
