Backlash and Blues: Coke Studio Bangla’s Rainy Anthem Sparks Outcry

A storm of controversy has erupted over the latest musical offering from Coke Studio Bangla, with audiences panning its experimental fusion of classical ragas and revered Bengali literature. Intended to celebrate the monsoon season, the track, titled “Megh” (Cloud), has instead drawn severe criticism from listeners who argue that the composition fails to respect the gravity of Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic poetry.

Arranged by the prominent Bangladeshi musician Shayan Chowdhury Arnob, “Megh” features an ensemble of vocalists, including Mohammad Shoaib, Masha Islam, and Indian artist Moushumi Datta. Built around the classical rainy raga “Miyan ki Malhar”—traditionally credited to the legendary court musician Tansen—the track also incorporates original lyrics penned by Swaron Datta with melodies composed by Shoaib. However, it is Arnob’s decision to integrate Tagore’s timeless poem “Sonar Tori” (The Golden Boat) that has alienated the core audience.

Since its release on 28 June, the digital response has been overwhelmingly negative. Listeners have flooded YouTube comment sections and social media platforms to express their disappointment, citing a jarring disconnect between the sacred rhythm of Tagore’s verses and the contemporary musical arrangement. Whilst previous Coke Studio Bangla releases routinely amassed millions of views within days, “Megh” has managed a relatively sluggish 600,000 views, a telling indicator of the public’s lukewarm reception.

Despite the mounting online backlash, Arnob and the central Bangladeshi performers have maintained a strict silence, declining requests for comment.

Breaking the silence from the production’s camp, Indian singer and bassist Moushumi Datta shared her experience of working on the project via social media, seemingly detached from the brewing controversy online. Expressing her initial excitement, Datta revealed that she had long been an admirer of Arnob’s work and was thrilled when he approached her for a collaboration, initially unaware that the project was destined for the prestigious Coke Studio platform.

Datta noted that Arnob requested her not only to provide vocals but also to play the bass guitar, a challenge she accepted with enthusiasm. Thanking the producer for the opportunity, she urged her followers to share the track if they enjoyed it. However, with the audience’s main grievance firmly rooted in the perceived mishandling of “Sonar Tori”, it remains to be seen whether the producers will address the cultural oversight or allow the monsoon track to quietly wash away.
