A cultural event organised by the district police force in Brahmanbaria ended abruptly late on Tuesday night following violent clashes with local madrasa students, leaving at least 20 students injured. The confrontation erupted outside the police lines facility in the West Medda area of the town after students protested against high-volume music blaring late into the night.

Protest Over Disturbance Escalates to Violence

The conflict began around 11:30 PM on 18 August during an entertainment programme hosted by the Brahmanbaria district police to mark the official visit of Abdul Kuddus Chowdhury, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police for the Chittagong Range. Although the DIG had already departed the venue after attending the formal proceedings, the cultural show continued with loud music.

Students from the neighbouring Jamia Darul Arqam Al-Islamia Madrasa approached police personnel, requesting them to lower the volume due to scheduled examinations taking place the following morning. While the sound was initially turned down, police operators allegedly turned the volume back up shortly afterwards. A second delegation of students returned to reiterate their request, leading to a heated verbal altercation with officers on duty.

The situation deteriorated rapidly when around 100 madrasa students entered the police lines compound in protest. Officers responded with a force-wide baton charge to clear the premises, sparking chaotic scenes. The sudden surge of force resulted in head injuries, bruises, and fractures among at least 20 students. Local residents helped transport the injured to Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital, where medical staff provided emergency treatment throughout the night.

Administrative Mediation and Crisis Management

Following the clash, the cultural programme was immediately cancelled as tension mounted across the town. To prevent further escalation, Superintendent of Police Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf convened an emergency mediation session with Sajidur Rahman, founder of the madrasa and Secretary-General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. District Council Administrator Sirajul Islam also joined the closed-door talks to assist in de-escalating the crisis.

During the meeting, madrasa representatives and community leaders submitted a firm list of demands. They insisted that the police administration guarantee full medical coverage for all injured students, initiate an independent investigation into the baton charge, and hold the responsible officers accountable. Crucially, they demanded a permanent ban on any future musical or cultural events within the Brahmanbaria police lines compound, warning of widespread regional blockades and demonstrations should their demands be ignored.

Superintendent Rouf conceded to the key demands, assuring the religious leaders that a thorough departmental inquiry would determine responsibility for the excessive force used. He committed to taking swift disciplinary action against any officer found negligent or overly aggressive, temporarily appeasing the student body and restoring calm to the area.
