Balam Adopts Viking Persona For Maula Music Video

Renowned Bangladeshi musician Balam has collaborated with prominent director Tanim Rahman Angshu for the visual production of his new track, Maula. The project, directed by Angshu, features a distinct aesthetic transformation, presenting the singer in a rugged “Viking” or explorer-inspired persona amidst remote mountainous terrain.

The track serves as the title song of Balam’s fifth solo studio album, which was initially released during the previous Eid-ul-Fitr festival. Following the audio launch, the high-production music video is scheduled to premiere officially on Monday, 25 May 2026.

Media Launch and Technical Presentation

The promotional campaign for the music video commenced on Saturday with a formal press conference held at Club Notredamians in Banani, Dhaka. The event served as the platform for the official trailer launch and drew numerous high-profile figures from the Bangladeshi music fraternity, who gathered to preview the visual project.

Creative Inception and Pandemic Origins

During the press conference, Balam disclosed the historical and emotional context behind the composition of Maula, tracing its origins back to the global crisis of the turn of the decade. The piece was written by Rashid Newton alongside Balam himself, opening with the spiritual refrain: “Maula Maula Maula, tui pana dere Maula” (O Lord, grant us refuge).

Balam reflected on the acute vulnerability that characterized the writing phase:

“During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a profound sense of helplessness enveloped society. It felt as though humanity had no alternative recourse or deliverance except through the divine Creator. The composition was born directly from that vulnerability. When I subsequently discussed the audio track with Tanim Rahman Angshu, we collectively determined that this specific song required a visual representation operating on an entirely different dimension.”

High-Altitude Production and Tactical Challenges

The music video’s distinctive visual identity was achieved through a demanding shooting schedule on location in the Kalinchowk region of Nepal. The production crew operated under extreme weather conditions at a high altitude of approximately 8,000 feet above sea level.

To complement the epic landscape, Angshu designed a specific “Viking” aesthetic for Balam, comprising elongated heavy coats, rugged styling elements, and a mysterious, atmospheric color palette.

Reflecting on the production delays and physical challenges, director Tanim Rahman Angshu stated:

“Our initial conceptual framework for this project was established back in 2020, but various logistical constraints prevented its execution at the time. A few weeks ago, Balam expressed his desire to finally revive the project, emphasizing that he wanted to present himself in an unconventional manner. That conversation inspired the Viking motif. We filmed under perilous freezing conditions in Nepal, and the entire crew endured significant physical hardship. I am confident that their dedication will be fully visible on screen.”
