Rabindranath Tagore Birth Anniversary Observed

Today marks 25 Boishakh, the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the foremost figure in Bengali literature, music, art and philosophy. Across Bangladesh and among Bengali communities worldwide, the occasion is being observed through cultural programmes and commemorations. Locations associated with Tagore’s life and work, including Jorasanko, Shilaidaha, Shahzadpur and Patisar, are hosting special events.

Rabindranath Tagore was born on 25 Boishakh 1268 in the Jorasanko Thakurbari of Kolkata, then part of British India. He was the fourteenth child of Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Sundari Devi. In 1913, he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature for his poetry collection Gitanjali, marking a significant milestone in Bengali literature’s global recognition. His song Amar Sonar Bangla Ami Tomay Bhalobashi is the national anthem of Bangladesh.

Tagore’s literary and artistic contributions span multiple disciplines. He was a poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, composer, educator, linguist, painter and philosopher. His body of work includes 52 volumes of poetry, 38 plays, 13 novels, 36 essay collections, numerous short stories, letters, and over 2,000 songs. His writings reflect themes of humanism, nature, spirituality and social consciousness, shaping modern Bengali cultural identity.

His influence extended beyond literature into music and education. Rabindra Sangeet remains a distinct genre of Bengali music, expressing a wide emotional spectrum including love, grief, patriotism and devotion. His ideas also played a role in inspiring cultural and moral resilience during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
