PETALING JAYA — Malaysia’s Religious Affairs Minister, Na’im Mokhtar, has publicly expressed his appreciation to Universal Music Malaysia for removing a music video by the Malaysian girl group Dolla from all official platforms.
Minister Na’im praised the label for demonstrating “discernment and responsibility,” noting that the decision reflects the entertainment industry’s awareness of community sensitivities and adherence to “shared values.” He emphasised that this move should inspire other players in the industry to produce content with greater care and social responsibility.
The music video in question is for Dolla’s latest single, “Question,” which was released on 6 November 2025. The video attracted widespread criticism on social media, particularly from conservative groups, due to the revealing nature of the outfits worn by the group members.
In the video, members Sabronzo (Wan Sabrina Wan Rusli), Tabby (Tabitha Ariel Lam), and Angel (Angelina Chai) appear in halter-neck tops with corset-style bodices, miniskirts, and other clothing exposing shoulders and midriffs. Sabronzo’s attire and performance drew particular attention and criticism, as she is a practising Muslim, sparking a heated debate online regarding appropriateness and cultural norms.
In addition to praising Universal Music Malaysia for its swift response, Minister Na’im indicated that authorities are considering further legal action. “We will assess whether any regulations or Shariah laws have been breached. Shariah legal action is under consideration,” he said, according to Berita Harian. This statement underscores the government’s ongoing scrutiny of media content in relation to religious and societal standards.
The removal of the video highlights the delicate balance entertainment companies face between creative expression and cultural sensitivities in Malaysia. It also signals the increasing importance of considering community norms and religious values in the production and release of visual media.
