Renowned Iranian actor Homayoun Ershadi, famous worldwide for his portrayal of the protagonist in the critically acclaimed film Taste of Cherry, has passed away at the age of 78. Ershadi, who had been battling cancer for an extended period, died on Monday, leaving an immense void in the world of cinema, according to Iranian news agency IRNA.
Before embarking on his acting career, Ershadi was a professional architect. He made his film debut in 1997 in Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry. Playing the lead role in the film, he gained instant global recognition. In the movie, he portrays a character named Badi, who searches for someone to bury him beneath a cherry tree as he plans to end his life.
In a twist of fate, Ershadi’s opportunity to act came while he was stuck in traffic on a street in Tehran. There, director Abbas Kiarostami spotted him and asked, “I’m making a film, would you like to act in it?” This role not only earned him the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival but also opened doors to greater success in his subsequent career.
Over his three-decade-long career, Ershadi starred in nearly 90 films, leaving a significant mark in both Iranian and international cinema. His role in the 2007 film The Kite Runner further cemented his status as a beloved actor, with audiences around the world connecting deeply with his character.
Born on March 26, 1947, in Isfahan, Iran, Ershadi initially studied architecture in Venice, Italy, before returning to Iran to work at an architectural firm. In 1979, he moved with his family to Canada, where he spent nearly a decade working in the architecture field. Ultimately, he returned to Iran and chose acting as his career path.
Ershadi’s career was a seamless blend of architecture and cinema, and his death leaves an irreplaceable gap in the Iranian film industry. His legacy, however, will live on through the films he graced, forever etched in the hearts of cinema lovers across the globe.
