Thirty-eight years ago, on 11th November 1987, Bangladesh witnessed the birth of its first all-female band, Blue Bird, which embarked on its musical journey from Chattogram. Today, the band continues to soar, overcoming time and numerous challenges with the wings of music. This was a groundbreaking move, as, at the time, it was unheard of for women to form bands, let alone dream of creating such a group.
A historic moment in the band’s journey occurred in December 1990, when Blue Bird took the stage at the Victory Fair in Chattogram. In front of thousands of spectators, a group of young women stood with guitars, drums, keyboards, and other instruments. They began their performance with the song “Ei Din Chirodin Surjer Moto Jhulbe”, and in that instant, a new era in Bangladesh’s musical landscape was born.
The band was founded in 1987 by Jacob Dias, a member of Chattogram’s popular band Spider. His vision was to create a platform where young women could prove themselves through music. Students like Rudmila Dias, Anjuman Ara, Catherine Dias, and others came together to form Blue Bird. Their first song, “Soikote Ekdin Nirjan Shondhay”, was an outstanding creation, marking the band’s entrance into the music scene.
In 1992, Blue Bird released their debut album, Soikote Ekdin, which achieved immense popularity. From that point, their journey never stopped. Today, lead guitarist Rudmila Dias, Ayra Tanjin, Tina Diksta, Shila Roy, Rokeya Lipi, and other members continue to stir the waves of music with their evolving sound.
The band’s journey has blended technological advancements, the rise of social media, and the creativity of the new generation, creating an extraordinary musical experience. On one hand, the enthusiasm of the older generation, and on the other, the passion of the younger generation, continues to fuel Blue Bird’s legacy. The band now spreads its melodies across the country, creating an unparalleled musical legacy.
Blue Bird has proven that with sincerity and love, no barrier is too great. The golden days of their music still soar through the skies, and their soaring voices are heard by fans everywhere.
