Born on 16 June 1920 in Varanasi, India, Mukherjee spent much of his upbringing in Kolkata after his family relocated there. Whilst studying at Mitra Institution in Bhabanipur, he forged a lifelong friendship with Subhash Mukhopadhyay, who would later become one of Bengal’s most celebrated poets.

Although he gained admission to study engineering at Jadavpur after completing his Intermediate examinations, the irresistible pull of music altered his destiny. He abandoned formal academic pursuits to immerse himself entirely in musical practice. Beyond his dedication to melody, he harboured a deep appreciation for literature, contributing writings to reputable publications during his early years.

Mukherjee’s professional musical journey commenced at a remarkably tender age. In 1933, assisted by Shailesh Dasgupta, he recorded his debut track, ‘Amar Ganete El Noborupi Chironton’. Though it achieved modest commercial response, his determination remained unshaken. By 1937, his career gathered momentum following the release of ‘Janite Jodi Go Tumi’ and ‘Bolo Go Bolo More’, penned by Naresh Bhattacharya and set to tune by Dasgupta.

By the 1940s, his artistic maturity led to collaborations with distinguished composers like Kamal Dasgupta. He broadened his reach into Hindi cinema under the name ‘Hemant Kumar’, captivating listeners with tracks such as ‘Kitna Dukh Bhulaya Tumne’, written by Faiz Hashmi. Simultaneously, he carved out an extraordinary reputation as a premier interpreter of Rabindra Sangeet, bringing an introspective, soulful depth to Tagore’s compositions.

In Bengali cinema, Mukherjee formed an iconic artistic partnership with legendary actor Uttam Kumar. His voice became the definitive musical soul for Uttam Kumar on screen, bringing characters to life in classic films including Saptapadi, Sagarika, Harano Sur, Shapmochan, and Deep Jwele Jai. Yet his contributions extended far beyond playback singing; he established himself as a versatile composer and film producer. His musical direction for the Hindi film Nagin remains a landmark achievement in Indian cinematic history.

On a personal level, Mukherjee married Bela Mukherjee in 1945. The couple had a son, Jayant, and a daughter, Ranu, who pursued a musical career during the 1960s and 1970s. His younger brother, Amal Mukherjee, also contributed to Bengali cinema as a singer and composer.

Throughout his lifetime, Mukherjee earned numerous accolades for his mastery as both a vocalist and director.

Hemanta Mukherjee passed away in Kolkata on 26 September 1989 at the age of 69. Whilst his physical presence has ended, his rich vocal heritage continues to echo through rainy evenings, quiet nights, and the enduring memories of music lovers across the world.
