The ongoing debate about working hours in the Hindi film industry continues to stir conversation, especially after Deepika Padukone’s decision to leave the sequels of Kalki 2898 AD and Spirit. This issue has sparked strong opinions, with some considering it an important discussion and others dismissing the claims as unrealistic. Recently, the director of Thamma, Aditya Sarapothdar, weighed in on the subject.
In an interview with News18, Sarapothdar shared his thoughts on working hours in film production, specifically about his leading actress, Rashmika Mandanna. He revealed that Rashmika works tirelessly for up to 12 hours a day without ever complaining of exhaustion.
“Often, there’s an expectation that everyone will work 24 hours straight. But that takes a toll on both the body and the mind. I believe a 12-hour shift is both reasonable and practical for shooting. Anything beyond that is not advisable,” Aditya explained.
He further added, “Rashmika works for 12 hours straight and has never once said she is tired. Perhaps she’s at a stage in her career where she can handle it. But this shouldn’t be imposed on everyone.”
Referring to Deepika’s recent comments, Aditya stated, “No rule should be forced upon everyone. Deepika started this debate, so it’s important to understand why she is requesting an eight-hour workday. It’s not right to make general statements without understanding the full context.”
The director also emphasised the responsibility of filmmakers to be mindful of actors’ health, recalling an instance with actor Paresh Rawal. “Pareshji was unwell at the time and had said he couldn’t continue with the film. We reassured him, ‘Sir, we’ll complete your work in a shorter time.’ As filmmakers, we have a duty towards the artist’s wellbeing.”
On a personal note, Rashmika has previously spoken about her tendency to overwork, despite knowing it is unsustainable in the long run.
“I tend to overwork sometimes, but I understand that it’s not sustainable. If we had the same working hours as an office job — like a 9 to 5 — it would be much better. It would allow for family time, sleep, and exercise, all of which are important for the future. But right now, I don’t have that control,” Rashmika admitted.
It is worth mentioning that Thamma, which released during the Diwali season, has already grossed over ₹121.8 crore in India. The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Rashmika’s next project, The Girlfriend, directed by Rahul Ravindran, is set for release this Friday in Telugu.
