Rabindra-Nazrul Jayanti Celebrations Conducted in Vancouver

The “Probash Bangla Cultural Society” has organised a cultural programme to celebrate the birth anniversaries of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. The “Rabindra-Nazrul Jayanti” festival took place at the Surrey Arts Centre Studio Theatre in Vancouver, Canada. The event commenced at 17:30 on 16 May, drawing members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community to celebrate the legacies of the two canonical figures of Bengali literature and music.

The Probash Bangla Cultural Society has operated since 2004 as a strictly non-political and secular organisation. It works to preserve and promote Bengali cultural traditions within the expatriate community through annual events such as Kobipaksho, the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh), theatrical productions, and musical evenings.

Festival Framework and Themes

The artistic creations of Tagore and Nazrul represent distinct thematic spheres within Bengali culture. Tagore’s compositions are noted for their grounding in classical ragas, devotion (Puja), romanticism (Prem), nature (Prokriti), nationalism (Swadesh), and formal rituals. Conversely, Nazrul’s repertoire encompasses themes of romance, nature, spiritual devotion, Islamic ghazals, Shyama Sangeet (devotional songs to the goddess Kali), folk melodies, and anti-colonial rebellion.

The Vancouver event was overseen by the society’s Board of Directors:

  • Ananya Sheela Shamsuddin

  • Lubna Alam

  • Tania Ghosh

  • Mikon Das

  • Sriparna Guhathakurta

  • Michael Mitra

  • Shamim Haroon

The evening opened with an informational presentation by Bipul Kamal, who discussed the life philosophies of both poets.

Event Chronology and Performances

The stage featured posters and banners displaying portraits of the two poets. The musical programme began with a choir performance of Nazrul’s song “Shuvro Somujjwal”, which addresses the eradication of injustice and inequality.

Opening Phase and Choreography

The inaugural segment transitioned into a blend of music and dance. Sushweta Banerjee performed Tagore’s song “Tomar Kache E Boro Magi”. Following this, the child and adolescent artists of Probash Bangla performed a group dance choreographed to Nazrul’s autumn-themed song “Shukno Patar Nupur Paye”.

Seasonal imagery continued with a duet dance by Oishee and Nabamita, set to the monsoon tracks “Mon Mor Megher Shonggi” and “Nil Onjon Ghono Kunjo Chhayay”. This segment concluded with individual performances by young artistes Nilav and Mohor, who performed Tagore’s awakening song “Alo Amar Alo”.

Solo, Duet, and Fusion Recitals

The second phase of the programme consisted of vocal and dance performances:

  • Vocal Solos & Duets: Lubna Alam performed the Nazrul Geeti “Modhur Nupur Baje”. Sudeep Mukherjee and Lalna sang a duet featuring “Monjori O Monjori Amer Monjori” and “Aji E Shondha”. Subhojit Das and Mananya Chakraborty performed a rendition of Tagore’s “Tomar Khola Hawa”.

  • Recitation: Shampa delivered a poetry recitation during the literary segment.

  • Devotional & Classical Fusion: Tania Ghosh and Saikat Ghoshal performed a duet of Nazrul’s romantic song “Daraye Duyare”. Ira performed a classical dance routine to “Shyam Sundar Giridhari”, portraying devotion to Krishna. Ananya Sheela sang “Sokhi Sajaye De” from Tagore’s dance drama Chitrangada, followed by Happy Das, who sang “Amar Nishith Rater Badol Dhara”.

  • Classical Instrumentation: Saikat Ghoshal performed a vocal and flute rendition of “Shaon Gogone”, a song composed by Tagore using a blend of the Maithili and Brajabuli languages.

  • East-West Fusion: Michael Mitra and Tania Ghosh presented a contemporary fusion arrangement combining Tagore tracks—including “Tomar Holo Shuru Amar Holo Sara”, “Mon Mor Megher Shonggi Ure Chole”, “Tumi Kemon Kore Gan Koro He Guni”, and “Jodi Tare Nai Chini Go Se Ki Amay Nebe Chine”—with a Hindi musical collage.

Final Phase

The event concluded with a collective choir performance of the peace anthem “Hinsay Unmotto Prithibi”, addressing contemporary global unrest. Following the final performance, Saikat Ghoshal and Michael Mitra delivered the official vote of thanks to the performers, patrons, and attendees.
