Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar on the anniversary of her birth, remembering her exceptional musical talent and enduring contribution to Indian music.
In a message shared on social media on Monday (28 September), Modi highlighted Mangeshkar’s distinctive voice and her contribution to taking Indian music and culture to audiences around the world. He said her remarkable singing talent helped bring global recognition to India, while her body of work enriched the country’s musical heritage.
Modi also said Mangeshkar’s contribution to Indian music would continue to be remembered for generations. His tribute recalled the lasting cultural influence of a singer whose career stretched across several decades and whose voice became closely associated with Indian cinema.
Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, in present-day Madhya Pradesh. She began training in music at a young age and went on to become one of the most influential playback singers in the history of Indian cinema. Her professional career began in the 1940s, and she remained a major presence in film music for decades.
Although Hindi film music formed a significant part of her career, Mangeshkar also contributed to Marathi and several other Indian-language musical traditions. Her ability to perform across different genres helped establish her as a versatile singer whose work reached audiences well beyond the films for which she recorded.
Her repertoire included romantic songs, devotional compositions and patriotic music. Songs such as ‘Aayega Aanewala’, ‘Lag Ja Gale’, ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’ and ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon’ became closely associated with different periods of Indian popular culture and remain familiar to generations of listeners.
Among them, ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon’ holds a particularly significant place in India’s cultural memory. Mangeshkar performed the patriotic song in 1963 in the presence of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Her rendition subsequently became widely recognised and helped cement the song’s place in India’s patriotic musical tradition.
Mangeshkar’s contribution was recognised through some of India’s most prestigious honours. In 2001, she received the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award. She had earlier been honoured with the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, as well as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, among other major distinctions.
Her influence extended beyond individual songs and film soundtracks. Over the course of her career, her voice became an enduring part of Indian popular culture, while her recordings continued to be heard by successive generations. The longevity of her appeal has also ensured that many of her songs remain part of the wider musical heritage of India.
Mangeshkar died in Mumbai on 6 February 2022 at the age of 92. Her death marked the end of one of the most celebrated careers in Indian playback singing. Yet her recordings and musical legacy have continued to resonate with listeners and performers.
