Ellie Goulding has opened up about her deeply personal new single, Destiny, reflecting on heartbreak and her emotional journey following her divorce. In an interview with NME, the singer-songwriter shared insights into the creation of the song, her shift away from the more escapist approach of her 2023 album Higher Than Heaven, and what fans can expect from her future projects, including plans for a classical album.
Released on Friday 14th November, Destiny marks Goulding’s first solo release since Higher Than Heaven and offers a stark contrast to the more electronic, airy sound of the previous record. Instead, Destiny is a return to Goulding’s roots, with its deeply personal lyrics and stripped-back sound. The track delves into her feelings of vulnerability and introspection, inspired by the emotional turbulence she experienced following her separation from her husband.
“I first heard this track when I had recently separated from my husband. It was a really difficult time for me, navigating what felt like the end of everything,” Goulding explained. “It wasn’t just the end of a relationship – it was the end of a marriage, a life I thought I knew. The only thing I felt I could do was turn to music.”
The collaboration that led to Destiny came about after Goulding discovered producer Jack Rochon on Instagram. Known for his work in trap music, Rochon was playing guitar in a way that immediately captivated Goulding. She reached out to him, and within hours, they were in the studio together, beginning the creative process that would lead to this emotive track.
In Destiny, Goulding gradually starts to reclaim a sense of joy that had been overshadowed by heartbreak. She describes the song as a pivotal moment in her life, signalling a fresh start and a new chapter in both her personal life and musical career. Moving forward, Goulding plans to continue exploring vulnerability in her music, with less emphasis on elaborate production and more focus on raw, heartfelt lyrics.
Fans can also look forward to a possible classical album, which Goulding hints could be in the works as part of her ever-evolving musical journey.
In addition, Goulding expressed admiration for British singer Lily Allen, describing her as a huge inspiration. “Lily’s got this fearless way of expressing herself, and I think it’s something we all need more of in music,” she said.
