An ambitious archival project intended to introduce the pioneering catalogue of late rock legend Ayub Bachchu to younger generations has provoked fierce criticism from long-time supporters, with discontent centring on a re-imagined version of one of his definitive rock ballads. The initiative, structured around a commemorative twenty-track tribute album titled Uttoradhikar (Legacy), invited contemporary recording artistes and bands to offer modern interpretations of Bachchu’s discography. Commercial proceeds from the venture were earmarked to fund the establishment of a dedicated Ayub Bachchu museum, yet the creative direction of several releases has triggered sharp division across the country’s music community.

The rollout commenced on 16 August to mark the birth anniversary of the iconic frontman, opening with an interpretation of “Rupali Guitar” by seasoned musician Bappa Mazumder. While seven tracks from the compilation have been released online, listener sentiment deteriorated abruptly following the debut of “Ghumonto Shohore”, arranged and performed by producer and singer Adit Rahman. The updated track altered the familiar architecture of the original composition by Bachchu’s seminal band LRB (Love Runs Blind), introducing experimental pacing, restructured chord movements, and an entirely modified vocal delivery.

Audiences expressed swift dismay across social media channels and digital streaming platforms, arguing that the rework stripped the ballad of its original emotional intensity. Many dedicated listeners characterised the adaptation as an insensitive departure from Bachchu’s artistic identity, with calls mounting for the video’s immediate removal from YouTube alongside warnings of potential legal action from aggrieved admirers. Comment sections were dominated by sharp feedback, with fans lamenting that the distinctive character of the classic had been diluted in the quest for contemporary production values.

The debate quickly extended beyond audiences to working musicians. Artiste Molla Babu, whose own acoustic rendition of “Koshto Kake Bole” had drawn warm appreciation during the tribute period, provided a measured perspective on the controversy. While acknowledging the constructive intent behind Uttoradhikar, he stressed that tribute recordings must balance stylistic experimentation with a profound respect for the source material. He remarked that whilst the track might stand comfortably on its own merits as an original contemporary song, it fell short of capturing the emotive appeal that made Ayub Bachchu’s work timeless.

As the controversy gathered pace, attention turned towards guitarist Abdullah Al Masud, Bachchu’s long-standing musical partner in LRB and the general secretary of the Ayub Bachchu Foundation. Having overseen multiple archival and preservation initiatives following the rocker’s sudden passing in October 2018, Masud issued a public statement clarifying that he held no operational or creative role in the project. He explained that he was neither approached nor involved in the development of Uttoradhikar, adding that his personal conviction remains firmly rooted in protecting Bachchu’s creative legacy from any compromise in tone, emotional weight, or artistic integrity.
