An Emotional New Creation by Jessie J Powered by Memory

While discussing her song “I’ll Never Know Why,” Jessie J became emotional on This Morning. She said the song was written in memory of her close friend and bodyguard Dave, who died seven years ago. It appears on her new album Don’t Tease Me With a Good Time.

Dave was more than her security guard; he was the voice who helped her stay grounded during overwhelming fame, heavy workloads and long touring periods. Jessie J shared how she would phone him whenever she felt pressured, seeking comfort in simple late-night walks. His death still pains her deeply.

Although written five years ago, the song was uncertain for the album until her new team heard it. They insisted it must be included because it would provide comfort for listeners facing grief, emotional exhaustion or loneliness.

At the Royal Variety Performance, she performed wearing a casual tracksuit with “Do you have a hoodie?” embroidered on the back — a familiar question Dave asked before their silent night walks. For Jessie J, the hoodie symbolised calmness and a space where she could be her true self.

She viewed Dave as an older brother, especially during early fame when she faced frightening stalker incidents. Through this song, she hopes to keep those memories alive.

The track carries a message to people experiencing hardship: “You matter. You’re loved.” She wishes Dave could witness her life today, particularly her journey into motherhood with her son Sk.

Recently, Jessie J also broke down on stage while performing “Comes in Waves,” written about her 2021 pregnancy loss. Sharing her personal pain helps her heal and, she hopes, helps others do the same.

Her hug with Princess Kate at the Royal Variety Show also drew attention, as she had been advised not to. Jessie J explained she saw not a royal but a mother who had openly fought cancer.

Her new album reflects her memories, struggles and the hope she wants to share.
