Sydney Concert Celebrates the Enduring Musical Legacy of Nazrul

The timeless songs of Bangladesh’s National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, took centre stage in Sydney, Australia, as a special musical evening brought together expatriate Bengalis and admirers of his work. The programme, titled Songs of Nazrul, offered an opportunity to celebrate the poet’s rich musical legacy and reconnect with an important part of Bengali cultural heritage.

Held on 24 October 2026 at Hurstville Civic Centre, the event was jointly organised by Sydney Music Club and Canberra-based Jolsha. The strong turnout reflected the continuing interest in Nazrul Sangeet among Bengali communities overseas, where cultural programmes play an important role in preserving connections with language, music and tradition.

The Saturday evening programme featured singers Nizam Uddin Ujjal and Dominic Robin Guda. They performed several celebrated compositions by Nazrul, including Arun Kanti Ke Go, Piya Piya Papiya, Bulbuli Nirab Nargis Bone and Amar Kon Kule Aaj. Their performances captivated the audience, with listeners remaining engaged throughout the musical presentations.

Each composition offered a glimpse of the distinctive character of Nazrul’s musical works. His songs are celebrated for their melodic richness, lyrical depth and emotional range. Themes of love, longing, nature and human experience feature prominently in his repertoire, which draws on a variety of musical traditions. This diversity has helped his compositions remain relevant to successive generations of Bengali listeners.

The instrumentalists also made a significant contribution to the evening. Flute, tabla and guitar accompanied the vocal performances, adding depth and texture to the arrangements. Their skilled accompaniment complemented the singers and helped create an engaging atmosphere throughout the programme.

The audience’s reactions towards the end of the event reflected the significance of the initiative. One attendee described organising an entire concert devoted to a classical musical tradition such as Nazrul Sangeet in a foreign country as a courageous undertaking. Such programmes require sustained dedication from organisers and performers, as well as an audience willing to appreciate and support the musical heritage.

Another spectator praised the dedication of Ujjal and Robin, highlighting the contribution of the accompanying musicians. According to the attendee, the artists’ commitment and the instrumentalists’ involvement had helped strengthen the roots of Bengali culture in Sydney.

For expatriate communities, music is often an important means of maintaining cultural identity. Programmes dedicated to established musical traditions allow people living abroad to remain connected with the artistic heritage of their homeland. They can also introduce younger generations to compositions that have shaped Bengali cultural life over many decades.

Nazrul holds a particularly significant place in that heritage. His extensive musical contributions reflect a remarkable range of styles and emotions, making his work an enduring part of Bengali artistic expression. Concerts devoted to his compositions provide an opportunity to appreciate that diversity while keeping his musical legacy alive beyond geographical boundaries.

The Sydney event was a celebration of that lasting connection. Through the performances of Nizam Uddin Ujjal and Dominic Robin Guda, supported by the instrumentalists, Songs of Nazrul brought the poet’s music to an enthusiastic audience. The response demonstrated that his compositions continue to resonate with Bengali music lovers, even thousands of miles away from Bangladesh.
