Popular Bangladeshi singer Mousumi Akter Salma is mourning the death of her father, Fazlul Haque. Salma shared the news with her fans through an emotional social media post on Wednesday (16 September), at around 10pm.
In the brief message, the singer wrote, “My father is no more.” She did not provide any further details at the time of announcing his death.
The news has cast a pall of grief over Salma’s family, relatives and close associates. The cause of Fazlul Haque’s death has not yet been disclosed by the family. Details regarding his funeral prayer and burial, including the time and location, have also not been announced.
The loss comes at a time when Salma had been maintaining a busy professional schedule with several new musical projects. Her recent releases and recordings have included songs in different styles, reflecting her continued engagement with both contemporary and traditional Bengali music.
One of her latest projects is the duet ‘Prem Leela’, recorded with fashion designer and singer Biplab Saha. The song draws on the traditions and cultural atmosphere of rural Bengal while telling a story centred on love. Its accompanying video has recently been released and has received a positive response from viewers.
Salma has also returned to Lalon music after a considerable gap. She recently recorded ‘Kunje Ar Bhalo Lage Na Bondhu Bihone’, written and composed by her guru Shafi Mondal. The song is scheduled to be released during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.
The project is another indication of Salma’s continuing connection with folk and traditional Bengali music. Lalon songs, rooted in the folk traditions of Bengal, often explore themes of love, spirituality, human relationships and the search for meaning. Salma has performed folk-oriented music throughout her career and continues to take part in projects that draw on the genre.
Alongside these recordings, Salma has lent her voice to a new arrangement of Rohon Raj’s popular song ‘Manush Boroi Swarthopor’. She recorded the track with Sumi Shabnam, Tasiba, Jarin and Rohon Raj. The music video has already been filmed.
The newly arranged song was scheduled for release on Thursday (17 September), a day after Salma announced her father’s death. The timing places the singer in a difficult personal moment as several of her professional commitments continue around her.
For now, however, Salma’s attention is likely to remain with her family following the loss. The family has yet to provide further information about Fazlul Haque’s death or the arrangements for his funeral and burial.
