Afghan singer and vocal human rights activist Aryana Sayeed has launched an exclusive, female-only European concert tour, transforming the musical stage into a powerful platform for political resistance. Titled ‘Ladies Only’, the tour aims to unite the widespread Afghan diaspora living across the continent while forcefully drawing international attention to the severe restrictions imposed on women and girls under current Taliban rule.
Speaking in a recent interview with the pan-European news network Euronews, Sayeed revealed that the concept for a women-only performance space was not an overnight decision. The idea had been taking shape over the past three to four years. The catalyst was the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, an event that dramatically reshaped the daily lives, freedoms, and futures of female citizens across Afghanistan.
Since taking control, the Taliban authorities have systematically eroded female participation in public life. Access to secondary and higher education for girls has been suspended, while women have been removed from numerous professional sectors. The regime has also imposed stringent controls on movement and social engagement, barring female citizens from entering public parks, leisure centres, and gymnasiums.
For Sayeed, these measures are not abstract political decisions; they represent a direct assault on the fundamental rights and futures of Afghan women. The ‘Ladies Only’ tour was designed precisely to counter this isolation. Rather than serving purely as entertainment, the concerts offer a safe, liberating environment where women can gather, foster solidarity, and express themselves without fear or ideological oversight.
Long regarded as a household name among Afghans worldwide, Sayeed previously gained immense popularity as a judge on the hit television talent show The Voice Afghanistan. Forced to flee her country amidst the 2021 evacuation, she continues her work from exile, utilizing social media channels, music platforms, and her non-profit advocacy organisation, DEFAW (Defenders of Equality, Freedom and Advancement for Women), to maintain direct contact with those still inside Afghanistan.
Sayeed views her music as a vehicle that can transcend political rhetoric, offering a voice to millions of silenced women enduring what she describes as Afghanistan’s darkest era. By restricting concert audiences strictly to women, she creates a unique cultural forum for exile communities to reconnect and share their collective experiences.
The European tour opened on Friday, 4th September, at the historic Laurenskerk in Rotterdam, Netherlands, followed by a performance in Stockholm, Sweden, on 5th September. The series continues on 26th September in Hamburg, Germany, before concluding in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt, on 3rd October. Through these performances, Sayeed ensures that the struggle for female dignity, education, and autonomy remains firmly on the global agenda.
