Why Irshad Kamil’s Songs Feel Like Coming Home

In the world of Hindi film music, Irshad Kamil has established himself as a lyricist whose words often extend beyond the demands of a screenplay and connect with listeners on a deeply personal level. Love, separation, longing, waiting, the desire to return and an attachment to one’s roots are recurring themes in his writing. His particular strength lies in expressing complicated emotions through words that remain accessible, poetic and emotionally resonant.

Kamil has been associated with Hindi cinema for more than three decades, and his Punjabi roots have played an important part in shaping his creative outlook. His childhood, family environment, cultural experiences and relationship with his native soil have all contributed to the sensibility visible in his lyrics. As a result, many of his songs do not remain confined to the characters or situations for which they were written. They can evoke a listener’s own memories of a person, a place or a particular period of life.

One of the defining qualities of Kamil’s lyricism is its simplicity. Rather than relying on complicated vocabulary to demonstrate literary sophistication, he often takes ordinary emotions and gives them a poetic form. His writing creates a natural bridge between everyday speech and poetry. That balance allows his lyrics to work on two levels: they serve the emotional needs of a film while leaving enough space for listeners to attach their own experiences to the words.

His long association with filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is particularly significant in this regard. Their collaborations have repeatedly explored personal emotion, relationships, travel, separation and the search for a way back to oneself. These subjects have provided Kamil with fertile ground for the kind of introspective and emotionally layered writing for which he is known. The songs often become more than background to a scene; they help articulate feelings that the characters themselves may struggle to express.

Kamil has also enjoyed a longstanding creative association with composer A R Rahman. Their collaborations have produced songs in which melody and lyric work closely together rather than competing for attention. Kamil’s words have been used to convey the tenderness of love, the pain of separation and the uncertainty that can accompany a search for identity. When combined with Rahman’s music, the emotional character of the lyrics can become even more pronounced.

The idea of roots and identity has also remained relevant in Kamil’s more recent work. In connection with the song ‘Main Wapas Aaunga’, the influence of Kabir’s thought has been significant. Kabir’s poetry and philosophy frequently turn towards self-examination, inner discovery and the search for truth beyond outward identities. Kamil has drawn on that broader intellectual tradition to explore the idea of returning—not simply to a physical place, but also to one’s inner self.

That distinction helps explain why the idea of ‘home’ carries such weight in Kamil’s songs. Home, in his writing, need not mean a particular house or geographical location. It can represent memory, identity, family, belonging and emotional security. The longing to return can therefore mean different things to different listeners.

For one person, a song may bring back memories of childhood. For another, it may recall a relationship left behind. Someone living far from their birthplace may hear in those lyrics an expression of their own attachment to their roots. The story on screen may belong to a fictional character, but the emotion can become intensely personal for the audience.

This is where Kamil’s songwriting acquires much of its strength. He does not simply tell listeners what a character is feeling. Instead, he creates an emotional space in which the fictional world of a film can overlap with the listener’s own memories. A song written for one particular situation can consequently acquire a much wider meaning once it reaches an audience.

His Punjabi cultural background, longstanding interest in poetry and extensive experience of writing for cinema have helped shape this distinctive voice. His lyrics can be romantic and intimate, but they can also be reflective, melancholic or concerned with questions of identity. Beneath these different moods, however, there is often a familiar emotional thread: the desire to find a place, a person or a sense of self that feels like home.

Kamil’s career also demonstrates how popular Hindi film songs can retain a strong literary and emotional dimension without becoming inaccessible to a mass audience. His language remains close enough to everyday experience to feel familiar, while its poetic quality gives seemingly simple emotions greater depth.

That may be why his songs often feel less like distant stories and more like fragments of the listener’s own life. The ‘home’ in an Irshad Kamil lyric is not necessarily an address. It can be a memory, a relationship, a childhood landscape or an inner sense of belonging.

And when listeners recognise themselves in those emotions, a film song becomes something more enduring than a moment in a story. It becomes a way of returning, however briefly, to a familiar place within themselves.
