Badshah Issues Apology Over Controversial Song

Renowned rapper Badshah has found himself at the centre of a nationwide controversy following the release of his latest track, Tattiri. The song and its accompanying music video have faced intense criticism for allegedly portraying women in a derogatory and objectifying manner, sparking widespread outrage across India. The controversy escalated to legal complications, with multiple FIRs lodged against him in Haryana. Authorities and the state’s Women’s Commission summoned Badshah to address the matter.

On Tuesday, Badshah appeared at the Haryana Women’s Commission office, accompanied by the director of the music video, Joban Sandhu, co-producer Mahavir Singh, and producer Hiten. Also present was Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women. During the hearing, the commission emphasised that content undermining the dignity of women is unacceptable under any circumstances and instructed the artist to ensure that such incidents do not recur. In a written statement, Badshah and his team expressed remorse and offered a formal apology.

In addition to his apology, Badshah pledged to promote positive messaging in future works. “From now on, I will dedicate my music to women’s empowerment and social development,” he told the commission. “Within the next four months, I plan to release a song focused on women’s empowerment, and I commit not to engage in any content that objectifies women.”

The controversy initially erupted due to the opening scenes of the Tattiri music video, which show schoolgirls removing their shoulder bags and performing dance moves accompanied by sexually suggestive gestures and lyrics. The provocative portrayal led Haryana’s Women’s Commission to file a formal complaint with the police. Political figures also weighed in; Aparna Yadav, daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav, wrote to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath requesting a ban on Badshah’s work in the state.

The track was released on 1 March through Badshah’s social media platforms and initially received a positive reception from fans. However, public backlash grew rapidly after the objectionable content was widely noticed. In response, the Haryana Police removed 857 links to the controversial video across multiple platforms.

This incident underscores the growing scrutiny of content that misrepresents women in Indian music and media. Badshah’s apology and forthcoming commitment to women’s empowerment mark a significant step towards addressing public concern and setting a precedent for responsible artistic expression.
